Prayers Like Dandelions

Yesterday we found one of my favorite flowers blooming in my yard . . . this flower is bright, sunny and is a lovely shade of yellow . . . and it is known as the Dandelion!

I know. Your reaction is likely similar to my grandson Josiah's reaction. He told me Dandelions are weeds, not flowers, but I told him I still loved them anyway! I had this conversation with my grandchildren last year, so this year when the first Dandelion bloomed in my yard, my grandson Caleb ran out and picked the yellow flower-weed for me!

How Will You Be Known & Remembered?

How do you want to be known . . . and remembered? I (Lynda) want my grandsons to remember I always greeted them with a smile, hug and "I love you!". I want them to remember their grandma was someone who had real joy.

Live on purpose. Use your years well and focus on what matters the most - hand down the faith and do it with joy! Enjoy the days before you and be quick to share your love, joy and faith with your grandchildren. It matters now, and in the future.

Prayer for Our Grandchildren

And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.” (Luke 8:14).

Dearest Lord Jesus,
We worry about the amount of time our grandchildren spend watching television, playing video games, texting their friends and amusing themselves with smart gadgets and devices. We worry that excessive screen-time consumes their time, interferes with their homework, inhibits their ability to develop necessary social skills and deadens their awareness of your Presence.
Protect our grandchildren from becoming sensory junkies, who are addicted to instant gratification provided by the world of technology. Give them the courage, and the ability, to unplug in exchange for spending uninterrupted, quality-time not only with their family and friends but with You.
We pray this in Your Name, Amen.

Why 43% Matters

Do you know why the percentage, 43% matters? It truly matters, because according to the Barna Group, 43% of people make the decision to receive God's gift of grace and forgiveness by placing their trust in Jesus before the age of 13. Yes, before the age of 13.

This "statistic" matters and it shows how grandparents know something parents often do not. This is the truth about how very, very quickly our sweet, little grandchildren are growing up. We remember how fast our children grew up. It may not have felt like it at the time . . . the day-in-day-out work of raising children does make it seem like it is moving along so very slowly . . . will they ever be potty-trained???!!!

Keep Your Opinions Elevated

It is true children will rise to the level of our opinion of them - this is true if we are grandparents and if we are parents. The way we see them is how they will see themselves. If we are critical and negative, they will see themselves in this way.
If however; we are positive, encouraging and challenge them with how we know they are able to be kind and make wise choices, they will see themselves as able and will act accordingly. Please allow me (Lynda) to share an example of this.

Help Our Grandchildren Be Thankful & Show Appreciation

There are many important messages for us to help our grandchildren learn; one such important message is for them to be people who appreciate others and are quick to show it. We certainly want our grandchildren to have thankful hearts and there are two ways for us to help them with this.

Grandparent on Purpose

It matters so much for us to be intentional when it come to handing down a heritage of faith. What does it look like to be intentional? One thing you are able to do is speak Scripture blessings over your grandchildren when they arrive to/leave your home, over the phone or even email to them. Write your blessing out and give them a copy. Consider using this "paraphrase" of Psalm 92 -

As you go through this day may your eyes see all the great things God does for you and how much He loves and thinks about you; remember and tell about His love for you and His faithfulness all day long. May your heart be filled with joy and praise to God for all He does for you! Keep on growing and bear fruit all your life, so even when you are old, you will be fresh and able to say how God is your Rock and all He does is good and right!

Grandmas Matter!

There is an article which has been "floating around" the internet where it talks about elephant grandmas; apparently research shows baby elephants are more likely to survive if there is a grandma elephant in their herd. Newsweek Tech and Science reported on this; they said - "Turns out grannies are very important to baby ellies. New research conducted over four decades in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park shows female elephants with a living mother have better chances at reproduction and give birth to babies more likely to survive." They studied 3,000 elephants in Southern Kenya for 42 years and discovered, “having an experienced mother, one who knows how to respond to their calf's demands and how to keep them close by, makes a huge difference in whether a baby elephant survives—having a grandma adds much needed extra help.”

Impact Future Generations on Purpose

What we say and do now has the potential to influence not just our children and grandchildren, but our great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren and following generations. Be intentional. Grandparent on purpose. Focus upon handing down the faith so not one of those who follow you are lost. Not one.   #grandmas #handingdownthefaith#itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose

A Prayer for Your Grandchildren, Because God is Bigger!

Are there storms on your grandchildren’s horizons, or are they already caught in a torrential downpour? If so, what is the reality of their storms?
• Are they one step behind the other students in their class?
• Are they pushed to excel?
• Are they having trouble making friends?
• Are they addicted to video games?
• Are they navigating two homes, two schedules and two set of rules, all in the wake of divorce?
There is power in Jesus’ name. He is, “able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). With that in mind, let us pray:

Help Your Grandchildren Learn to Pray

If we are serious about knowing and walking with God, we must be people who pray. If we are serious about helping our grandchildren know what it is to know and walk with God, we must do all we are able to do to help them learn to pray.

We - and they - may think prayer is difficult, but you are able to help them learn to pray by teaching them to pray Scripture back to God. Pick a passage and make it into a Scripture prayer, then connect with your grandchildren and share the prayer with them. Make it your and their prayer for a week, or even a month. As you all pray God's Word back to Him, you will all learn more about talking with God - and most importantly - you will all learn more about God and walking with Him. This is handing down the faith and it matters!   #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose

Be the Precious Gem to Your Family

Oh yes, we grandmas (and grandpas, too) are a precious, valuable gem; people of great value to our families . . . or at least we have the potential to be this for them. But, what does it look like for us to be this "precious gem"? Let's look at these verses for some insight . . .

Be a Grandma with Joy & Laugh Lines

A few months ago my grandsons and I were talking about the Fruit of the Spirit when my nine-year old grandson said he thinks of his poppa and I when he thinks of the word "joy"; my six and four year old grandsons agreed! This is one of the most wonderful things anyone has ever said about me!

While we certainly want our lives to reflect the love of God, reflecting the joy is extremely important. And, when we are people who show joy; who are quick to smile and laugh, who consistently greet our grandchildren with a smile on our face and a twinkle in our eyes, our grandchildren will be pointed to God. Why wouldn't they want a life of joy? And, why wouldn't we want our grandchildren to not just see us as people who live joy, but to remember us as such!

In this life our grandchildren will see no shortage of angry, cranky people; don't let them put you in this category. No! Live so you are firmly in the joy "category"! Live a life of joy, because, sometimes the face of God comes with laugh lines!   #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose

Everything is Possible for God & A Prayer for Those We Love

Pray. It is one of the single-most important things for us to do for the grandchildren God has given to us. It is one of the single-most powerful things we are able to do as well as we approach our loving God who wants us to bring our concerns and joys to Him. He promises to hear. He promises to listen. He promises to answer. And God ALWAYS keeps His promises!

As a mom and grandma, there isn't anything more important to me than for my son, daughter, daughter-in-law and grandsons to grow to be people who know and love Jesus. This world is at times a scary place; it seems evil is laughed at, discounted and accepted like it has not been before . . . at least in my lifetime. As I think about the things I want to pray for those I love, I think about the things Jesus prayed for His disciples, and for all of us, as recorded in John 17.

Jesus prayed His disciples would be protected by the power of God's name, so none of them would be lost. He did not ask God to take them out of the world, but to protect them from the evil one, so they - and we - will have unity and the world will believe.

I believe there is good reason to pray these same things for my family and others as well . . .

Speak the Truth

The world in which we live is filled with blessings from God all around us - our families, friends, the beautiful Earth on which we live, the gifts of a bountiful harvest and clear, clean water - this list could, and does, go on and on. God is real and His great love for us is obvious everywhere we look. This is the truth.

But, this world also is filled with those things which have the potential to sidetrack and derail our faith, and the faith of those we love. All it takes is a quick look at the culture in which we live to see this is true. It is all too easy to become caught up in things which push us away from God. There are many in this world who say there is no God and we are far too easily deceived into believing difficult times in our lives means God does not love us.

Resource to Help You Hand Down Faith - Friends With God Story Bible: Why God Loves People Like Me

One of the things we Grandmas with Heart want to do to equip and empower you to hand down the faith to the children you love, is to let you know about resources which are available to help you do exactly this. So, today I'm very happy to let you know about a wonderful resource from Group Publishing!

A "Picture" of God's Love

As grandmas, of course, we love our grandchildren unconditionally. As grandmas, we tend to be our grandchildren's biggest "cheerleaders". As grandmas, when we say; "I love you" to our grandchildren, it is not really a surprise, because they hear it from us - and experience it from us . . . often!

But these things are very positive things, because when our grandchildren experience how we never turn them away and are never too busy for them, they will better understand - and believe - the same is true about God . . . on an even bigger scale! Make time for your grandchildren today and connect with them in person or through tech. Tell them about how God is never too busy for them - it matters!  #grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo #grandparentingonpurpose

Pray Our Grandchildren Serve as Jesus' Hands & Feet

Let’s pray our grandchildren serve as the hands and feet of Christ:

Dearest Lord Jesus,
We pray our grandchildren (insert names) are the body of Christ to a broken world. Let them, “do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than themselves. Let each look not only to his own interests but also to the interest of others” (Philippians 2:3-5). Please let them be, “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing in the Lord their labor is not in vain” (I Corinthians 15:58).
In Christ’s Name we pray,

Help Your Grandchildren See God's Fingerprints

It is so very important for us to help our grandchildren learn to see God's "fingerprints" in their lives. Listen to this clip of Lynda Freeman when she spoke for the Legacy Coalition in the closing general session at the Legacy Grandparenting Conference a few years ago and how she encourages us to help our grandchildren see how God was faithful yesterday, He is faithful today, so they will be able to believe he will be faithful tomorrow.

Blessings from the Hand of God

I (Lynda) love a feature on my facebook called "On this Day", because each morning when I look at it, I am reminded of the many blessings with which God has showered my life by the adorable things my grandsons said and did when they were younger. For example, "On this Day" when my oldest grandson was just three years old, he asked me to call him, "Super, Snazzy, Mighty Josiah", not just "Josiah"! Then he proceeded to "save" me from a "scary" bus which was trying to "suck me into it forever"! What would I ever have done without "Super, Snazzy, Mighty Josiah"?!!!

Who Are You? Please Take Our Poll

Who are you? Grandparents today are young and tend to be active. We also want to be engaged with and involved in the lives of our grandchildren. While there are interesting stats out there about who we are, I (Lynda) thought it would be fun to get a "snapshot" of who we are! On the right side of the page you will find a simple poll about Grandparents Today. Please answer - feel free to check as many boxes as apply to you; it will be fun to see how we compare with the national "stats"!

So . . . what do you do???

Grandparent on Purpose - It Matters

As grandparents we know something important which parents do not know. We know children grow up so very fast. At the time when we were "knee-deep" in potty-training, getting children to school and the day-in-day-out busyness of life with children, it did not seem like they were growing up so very fast. In fact, there were times we may have wondered if they were ever going to grow up.

But, looking back we know how vary fast they actually grew up. We are now able to see those years flew by. And, added to this we know there are likely more days behind us than there are in front of us - we are not getting any younger. Our grandchildren are growing up and we are getting older, so it truly matters for us to make the most of the time we have with our grandchildren. We need to grandparent on purpose.

As the weekend is upon us, let's make time to connect with our grandchildren on purpose - no matter their age or location. Clearly, if they live near it is easier to do this, but even if they live far with facetime, email and even just a phone we are able to connect. Consider the following ideas . . .

God's Great Promise & A Prayer

When we first became parents, if we were people who knew, loved and followed God, we certainly wanted this for our children as well. As they grew up, we did what we knew to do to point them to Jesus and rejoiced as they put their trust in Him. When they married, we experienced the joy of watching them start to build their home on the firm foundation of God and His Word.

What Matters the Most

These are the deposits which matter the most - far beyond any deposit in any bank. While we live we are able to influence our grandchildren and point them to God. After we are gone, the memories our grandchildren carry with them throughout their lives still have the potential to influence them.

Make deposits which matter the most!   #grandmas #handingdownthefaith#itmatterswhatwedo

Grandmas with Heart Blog - Check Out the Resources

I am happy to say Grandmas with Heart now has an actual blog! On this blog we will be able to share more resources; something which was more challenging to do on just a facebook page, which we will keep, but will post each day on this blog information and ideas to encourage, engage, equip and empower you as you hand down the faith to the children you love.

Remember, Tell, Rejoice

How has God worked in your life? How has He shown His great love to you?

Take time today to tell the next generation - consider making a "God's Great Deeds Jar". Each day, before you go to bed, write on a piece of paper how God has shown His love to you - big or small ways - in the day you just lived. Put it in the jar. Next year at the start of 2019, take out the slips of paper and enjoy being reminded of how God worked in your life. Do this with your grandchildren, so they are able to see how God works in their lives, too! Remember, Tell, Rejoice!

What cookie do you make the most for your grandchildren? At my house the favorites are straight up peanut butter and peanut butter toll house!

They Are Really the Big Things

Since our facebook page has been up and running for several months now, I thought I'd go ahead and share a few of our most liked posts . . .

No matter the age of your grandchildren, take time today to do something special with/for them - make a call, email, send a snail mail, stop by just to say hello! It may seem "small", but to them it will be a "big" reminder of how much you love them. And, do the really big thing - be sure to pray for them, too!

Be Sure Your Grandchildren Know They Are Lovable

I (Lynda) am very intentional when it comes to being sure my grandchildren KNOW I love them. We talk about it. We show it with our actions. I email and snail-mail them notes where I always say I love them. We even sing about it! I pay attention to the things in which they are interested and listen when they have something they want to tell me.
