Love Does Matter & Makes a Difference

Just a few minutes spent listening to the morning news leaves us with broken hearts; there is so much sorrow, pain and confusion in our country and in our world as well. What do we do? How do we respond? How do we comfort our grandchildren who are growing up in this world? What do we do to help them learn to make wise choices in a world where other children, and adults, make choices which harm themselves and others? Serious and important questions for sure.

Some question if, "thoughts and prayers" make a difference. I believe they do for two reasons - they allow us to enter into the sadness/needs of others by showing we care enough to think about them and pray for them and, because God is able to bring comfort and peace when nothing and no one else is able to do so. But, since I believe love requires an action - it has to be, and be shown by, more than words, we need to act as well.

I do not want to over-simplify a very serious problem, but I do believe the answer is found in Mark 12:30,31 . . .
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
If we love God with our all and love others the same way, we will not harm others in any way. If we love God and others with our all we will do whatever we are able to do to help others - those experiencing loss, sadness, refugees, those who need help, the hungry, lonely, etc. - and we will teach our grandchildren to be people who love God and others with their all as well.

It is not possible to harm another, take advantage of others, put others down based on their race, gender, leave others out, talk in unkind ways about others, fail to keep our word, gossip or do anything unkind if we love God and others with our all. If we love God and others with our all we will value life - all life and we will treat others with love - all others; if they look/talk/act/believe/vote like us, or not.

So, yes, definitely keep those around the world, who are suffering, grieving and in need, in our thoughts and prayers, but also look for ways to show love - show we love God and all others - and teach our grandchildren to do the same. The next week I will share ideas for ways you might be able to help your grandchildren learn to be people who love God and others with their all.
