There is Never a Moment When God is Not Thinking About You & Those You Love

You may be a committed prayer warrior who spends time every day talking with God on behalf of the ones you love and know. For you prayer may be as much a part of your life as breathing. But, you may be a person who struggles with praying. If this is you, take heart! While you may struggle with prayer, while you may find the day has slipped by and you did not stop to pray, take heart! God is always thinking about you!

Media Does Influence Our Grandchildren, But So Do We

For decades (about two and a half) I (Lynda Freeman) have been writing websites/blogs about Children's Ministry. From time to time on my Children's Ministry blog, I share video clips from George Barna - he has so much insight as to what is happening in the world in which we, and the ones we love, live. Today I'd like to share one of his video clips with you. (You will find it at this link.) In this video George talks about the seven major influences in our lives - please take a minute to watch it.

Now, while he is talking about ministry in churches, think about what you just saw/heard in relation to you and your grandchildren. Consider the following . . .

New Facebook Photo Frames for You

I made some new Facebook photo frames which will fit with the new
round profile photos and have our new logo. They are all free and there are even two for Christmas!

Thankful Thursdays - Pray Be Watchful & Thankful - Colossians 4:2

One of the obvious things we do when we hand down the faith, is we teach our grandchildren how to be people who pray. We help them learn to pray Scripture, keep a prayer journal, and learn to pray for others, but do we also take time to teach them to watch and be thankful as they pray? If we have taught our grandchildren to pray, we have done something important, but there is still more to teach.

Remember, Tell, Rejoice!

How has God worked in your life? How has He shown His great love to you? Take time today to tell the next generation - consider making a "God's Great Deeds Jar". Each day, before you go to bed, write on a piece of paper how God has shown His love to you - big or small ways - in the day you just lived. Put it in the jar. Next year at the start of 2020, take out the slips of paper and enjoy being reminded of how God worked in your life.

Hand Down the Faith with "Mystery Bags" - Believe in God Even When We Do Not Understand

Last month I shared an idea with you for a Mystery Bag using zippy bags, water and sharpened pencils. Today I want to use this same project, but with a different, and important focus. Don't worry, your grandchildren will not mind at all repeating the project with the zippy bags . . . my grandsons love repeating this one!

The point is a very important one for us to be purposeful in handing down to our grandchildren - yes, there will be times in their lives when they do not understand what is happening to and around them. Yes, there will be things in the Bible which they do not understand; but, just because we do not understand something, it does not mean we are no longer able to believe in God.

A Prayer for a New Heart - Jeremiah 24:6, 7

While we certainly remember and think about Jesus choosing to come to Earth to save us all throughout the year, this is the time of year when we tend to celebrate it. And, while we are absolutely able to celebrate Christmas with all of our family and friends, whether they are believers and are walking with God or not, if they are our celebration and joy are greater.

Likewise, if we have loved ones who do not believe or who are not walking with God, we are able to celebrate Jesus' birth at Christmas, but perhaps with not quite as much joy. However; take a look at this amazing promise from God in Jeremiah 24:6, 7 -

Give Your Grandchildren the Best Gift

As you make or finalize your Christmas gift list, be sure to keep in mind, the best gift you will ever give your grandchildren is the example of what it looks like to live life as someone who loves God and others with your all. When we love God with our all, we will honor, respect and obey Him and His Word and when we love others we will be kind, patient and generous.

Live On Purpose

When it comes to handing down the faith, the words we say matter; but so do the things we do. When our grandchildren experience our love, kindness and gentleness, see us respond with joy, peace, patience, and witness how we behave in a way which is good, faithful and shows self-control, these things speak louder than any words we will ever speak. And, these things will stick with them.

An Important Part of a Grandma's Job Description

There are many things which are rightly considered to be part of a "grandma's job description", including; prayer warrior, teacher, nurturer, activity planner and book reader. When my grandsons were little they were certain giving hugs and kisses were definitely on the list! I'm sure you are able to add to the list of "grandma's job description" and one you might add is, provider of comfort.

Give the Gifts which Matter the Most

For the past two days I've been writing about helping our grandchildren give at Christmas and helping them  receive at Christmas. So, today, on this weekend where we may think about finding great sales and the "perfect" gifts we want to give to those on our gift list, I'd like to encourage you to take time to focus upon giving the gifts which matter the most . . .

Psalms 86 - A Prayer for a Heart From & Protected by God

Today, this week, the rest of this year and throughout next year as well, pray and ask God to protect your children's and  grandchildren's hearts and minds, so they will love and follow Him with all their heart. I pray this for my children and  grandchildren and have been able to see how God answers this prayer over and over again!

Consider making Psalm 86 your prayer for your grandchildren, too! After our grandchildren making the choice to believe in Jesus, is there any more important thing for us to pray about for the ones we love?

They Will Never Forget How Much We Love Them

Think today of a way you are able to show love to your grandchildren - be it a hug in person, or an email expressing why you are thankful God blessed your life with them.

Top 5 Reasons for Focusing our Grandchildren on Receiving at Christmas

Yesterday I shared my Top 5 Reasons for Focusing our Grandchildren on Giving at Christmas, but today I want to stop to think about the Top 5 Reasons for Focusing our Grandchildren on Receiving at Christmas . . . yes, I said; "receiving"!

At Christmas children - and adults, too - think quite a bit about the gifts they would like to receive, but in God's Word we find some of the most incredible gifts anyone could ever receive . . . and we read they are gifts God wants us to receive! Consider the following . . .

Saturday Promises - God will Not Forsake Those Who Seek & Trust Him

In our lifetime we are likely to be blessed with friends and acquaintances who we are able to trust. People who make our lives better just by knowing them. But, it is also likely you will meet and even know people who, over time, prove themselves to be untrustworthy, people who do not do what they say they will do and people who make a special set of rules by which they live. These people often end up disappointing and even hurting us. Our children and grandchildren will experience both types of people throughout their lives as well.

However; God NEVER disappoints or hurts us. We, and those who come after us, are always able to trust God. When we seek Him we will discover His faithful love and experience how He will NEVER forsake us.

Pray a Blessing from Psalm 92 for Your Grandchildren

It matters so much for us to be intentional when it come to handing down a heritage of faith. What does it look like to be intentional? One thing you are able to do is speak Scripture blessings over your grandchildren when they arrive to/leave your home, over the phone or even email to them. Write your blessing out and give them a copy. Consider using this "paraphrase" of Psalm 92 -

Top 5 Reasons for Focusing Our Grandchildren on Giving at Christmas!

“Christmas time is here. Happiness and cheer. Fun for all that children call, Their favorite time of the year!”

Ah, yes . . . Christmas time is here, or at least many believe so; we celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday, many of us put up our Christmas trees (guilty as charged!) and today people are out shopping for bargains. Christmas time is here and while children are likely to focus upon the gifts they hope to receive . . . as for many children it is their favorite time of year, I believe it is the ideal time to redirect their focus to giving to others! So . . . here are my Top Five Reasons for Focusing Our Grandchildren upon Giving at Christmas . . .

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from Grandmas with Heart!

#grandmas #handingdownthefaith #itmatterswhatwedo#grandparentingonpurpose

Make Known God's Deeds & Blessings

On this Thanksgiving Day when we focus upon giving thanks, consider adding a simple way to track your family's blessings all throughout the coming year. At your dinner, give each person a piece of paper and pen/crayon. Give a few moments for them to write/draw something for which they are thankful on their paper and let everyone share the thing for which they are thankful.

Family . . . A True Gift From God

Family. What is a family? The On-Line Dictionary defines family as . . .
"a. A fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children. b. Two or more people who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one another, and reside usually in the same dwelling place."
I like this definition. "Two or more people who have long-term commitments to one another." Who on earth would we be more committed to, "long term" than our family? When God created people He created them to live in a family. Both the Old and New Testament speak to the importance God places on the family. God wants families to grow together to know and serve Him. Sometimes families do a great job of this and other times families struggle with their relationships, but this "long-term commitment" is part of what keeps families together!

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - Thankful Thanksgiving Tablecloth

Today's Mystery Bag is something special which you could do tomorrow, on Thanksgiving with your family - and you still have time to pull this together if you decide to do it.

For about eight years now, each Thanksgiving I put a special tablecloth on our table. When everyone has finished eating, I hand out permanent ink markers and everyone writes, or draws something for which they are thankful from the past year. When the grandsons were little, their contribution was mostly scribbles, but we asked them to tell about their "drawing" and wrote a few words, along with the year, so we would be able to know in future years the things their "scribbles" represented.

This tablecloth grows more special as the years go by; it is a recording of the things for which my family are thankful. If you would like to start this tradition with your family, you will need the following items . . .

Be Thankful & Have Hope

As we draw closer to the day when we particularly think about being thankful for all our many blessings, take some time today to also think about how you have hope due to God's great faithfulness!

A Prayer of Thanks to God - Psalm 100

Yesterday I wrote about helping our grandchildren learn to be thankful and grateful, so today I thought I'd share a prayer for a thankful heart for you and one you are able to teach them as well.

Psalm 100 tells us all about being thankful and gives us specific things we are able to be thankful about - God made us, we are His, He is good, His love lasts forever and His faithfulness is for all the generations! Absolutely things for which we, our children and grandchildren are able to be thankful! Consider making this your prayer . . .

Help Your Grandchildren Watch for God's Blessings in 2019

As grandmas who are purposeful about handing down the faith, we talk often about the things God has done for which we are thankful. It is a natural, "given".

We also talk with our grandchildren about the things God has done for them for which they are thankful. But, in the coming year, we could be much more purposeful in helping our grandchildren be people who are thankful by helping them learn to "open their eyes" and "see" God's many blessings, big and small.

Bring on the Gratefulness

Thanksgiving is just three days away and while it is the ideal opportunity to talk with and model to our grandchildren what it means to be thankful, a genuine heart filled with thankfulness is one which shows itself all year long.

Linda Ransom Jacobs is one of our Grandmas with Heart. She is the founder of Divorce Care 4 Kids and she wrote the following; "Did you know children who show appreciation are overall happier and have better attitudes, because they feel better about themselves? So bring on the gratefulness." (You will be able to read an article Linda wrote about this at the following link.)

Build an Unshakable Foundation

Whether your grandchildren are involved in a Sunday School at a solid, Bible-believing church or not, do not depend upon the church to hand faith to your grandchildren. This is the "job", and great joy, of the parents and grandparents; not the church.

Prayer for the Residents of California

If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.” (Daniel 3:17).

Heavenly Father,

Today, we pray for the residents of California. Raging wildfires, fueled by strong winds and low humidity, have swept across their land, claiming countless lives. Hundreds of residents are still missing. The fires have scorched hundreds of thousands of acres, destroying homes and churches, businesses and schools. While some of the fires are contained, others continue to blaze like seething infernos.

God Knew What He was Doing

Far too often this world makes our grandchildren think they are "less than", or need to be something other than who God created them to be if they are to find true "happiness". But, the truth is God knew what He was doing when He created them - He did not make any mistakes at all! They are exactly who God created them to be and they are full of value exactly as they are.

Saturday Promises - God & His Word will Never Leave Us

Life is often wonderful, filled with blessings and brings us great joy. It also has times when it is challenging, confusing and even brings sadness. I am so thankful no matter what life brings, I am able to hold firmly to God's promises and the promise for today is one of my personal favorites!

Take Your "Impossible Things" to God

As this week wraps up, I want to just take a moment to encourage you with this quote from Charles Spurgeon - "God alone can do what seems impossible."

First of all, this is true. God is far bigger than we think He is and He is able, and willing, to do far more than we will ever imagine. Nothing, absolutely nothing is impossible for God.

"Disturb the Present"

I know grandmas - and grandpas - who have sons, daughters, in-laws who join them in handing down the faith to the children they all love. These grandmas are part of a strong team made up of the first and second most influential people in the lives of their grandchildren - the parents and grandparents. When this strong team works and prays together to hand down the faith, they are able to make a significant impact upon the lives of the children they all love.

I also know grandmas - and grandpas - who are the only ones who hand down the faith to their grandchildren. These grandmas - and grandpas - are also able to make a significant impact upon the lives of the children they love, but when they are the only ones who hand down the faith, it is easy to become tired and to feel alone.

We Can Not Love Too Much

My youngest grandson asked me last night why I tell him I love him every time I see him. I told him, because I am grandma. He looked at me, smiled and said, "You are filled with love from the bottom of your toes to the tippy of your head!" Oh yes! Without a doubt. I am "filled with love from the bottom of my toes to the 'tippy' of my head!"

Thankful Thursdays - Be Thankful, Show Thankfulness & Give Thanks - Colossians 3:15-17

It is easy to think about being thankful this time of year; after all, next Thursday is Thanksgiving. But while we tend to talk about being thankful, we may end up actually being thankful in a "busy way". By this I mean we may not really stop to think about all of God's many blessings and just give and say the "typical" type of thanks.

This does not mean we are not able to be, or should not be, thankful for the every-day, "typical" things, but our thankfulness is able to be, "deep". It is able to be something which shows every day and in every thing we say and do.

Colossians 3:15-17 gives us some wonderful inspiration to help our thanks be "real".

Make a Tremendous Impact in the Lives of Our Grandchildren

I've been writing about how what we do as grandparents really does matter. We really are able to make a significant and lasting difference in the lives of our grandchildren. I love this quote by the Kimmels - they say this so well!

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - Origami Christmas Star

A few years ago I involved my three grandsons in making my Christmas cards. The boys helped draw the design on the cover, I wrote the inside greeting and then the boys prayed with me for the people who received our cards. We prayed the coming year would draw the people who received the cards closer to Jesus.

Yes, the drawings looked like a seven year old, four year old and two year old helped to draw them . . . after all, the boys were seven, four and two at the time, but the cards were the best Christmas cards I ever sent, because the boys helped make them and most importantly, they prayed with me for the people who received them.

This year I'm going to have my grandsons help me with my Christmas cards once again, but this year we are going to fold origami stars which the people who receive them will be able to hang upon their tree. Since my grandsons enjoy origami, I expect the stars will turn out well and will look nice hanging on the trees of the people who receive them; but the most important thing, once again, will be how we will pray once more for everyone who receives them.

If you would like to involve your grandchildren in helping you create origami Christmas Star Ornament Cards, consider making this project a Mystery Bag project. You will need . . .

It All Matters

You may think you do not influence your grandchildren very much, but the truth is, you do. Grandparents are the second most influential people in the lives of their grandchildren, so it matters what we say and do to and with our grandchildren.

A Prayer to be Thankful for & See God's Goodness & Never-Ending Love

Have you ever noticed when you are thankful, in particular for God's goodness and never-ending love, you are more likely to be walking closely with Him? While we are not able to make our grandchildren walk with God, if we model and teach them to see and be thankful for God's goodness and never-ending love, they are far more likely to make the wise choice to walk with God.

We are not able to make them do this, but we absolutely are able to pray and ask God to help them have open eyes to see His goodness and love for them. Consider adding Psalm 136:1 to your prayers for your grandchildren (and grown children as well).

Pray with Confidence

What are you praying about today? What fills your thoughts and heart? Do you have a grandchild, family member and/or friend who is ill? Are you praying for your grandchildren as they make decisions about the college they will attend next year? Are the children you love in classroom settings where they are told the Bible is not true? Do you have daughters, sons in-laws, grandchildren who are not walking with God? What is on your heart and mind as you talk with God today?

What it is Really All About

Handing down the faith is all about God and putting our children's and grandchildren's best interests over our own. We tell them about who God is, about His great grace and love and we help them learn how they are able to know, love and walk with God. We know life is a gift from God and is given to us so we will use the time we are given to hand down the faith to the children and grandchildren also given to us by God.

Hand Down the Faith on Purpose So Your Children & Grandchildren Know & Remember

When you read through the Old Testament, you see how God showed His grace, forgiveness, mighty hand, great faithfulness and love over and over again. He forgave Adam and Eve, walked with Joseph throughout his time in Egypt, protected Moses, so he would be able to lead the people out of Egypt to the land God promised would be their own. He parted the Red Sea, provided food and water while the people wandered in the desert and gave them leaders like Moses and Joshua to get them to a place they would be able to call home. God protected them from people who wanted to harm them - even one time using a donkey which talked.

Over and over again God provided, forgave, showed grace, brought down actual walls, protected and showed His great love. In light of all of this, you might think God's people would never be able to stop talking about all God did for them. But in Judges 2:10 we read . . .

Prayer of Thanks for Our Grandchildren

Heavenly Father,

Our grandchildren are uniquely Yours. They are Your handiwork (Ephesians 2:10), wired according to Your perfect design. While one of our grandchildren spends hours converting an unsightly lump of clay into a masterpiece, another dismantles an object to discover how it works. While one shinnies up a tree in the blink of an eye, another insists we read, “just one more book.” While one appears shy in large crowds, another has the innate ability to make us laugh.

Saturday Promises - God is Good, His Love Never Ends & He is Faithful Always

I don't know about you, but this has been a week filled with news reports which brought sadness to my heart. From the division in our country which was evidenced by yet another bitter election, to the senseless murder of people just enjoying a night out dancing at a bar and grill in California, to the news of yet another horrible fire in California burning an entire town to the ground; it was a week of news which left me feeling frustrated, disappointed and so sad. So, especially in light of the news of the week, I, for one, find great comfort in the promise God gives in Psalm 100:6 -

We Have an "Expiration Date", So Hand Down the Faith

When we are committed to be grandmas (and grandpas/parents who hand down the faith) we absolutely understand the truth in this quote. We do teach by all means possible, we do remember and hold tightly to the Character of God, and take every opportunity to teach our grandchildren how they are able to know, love and walk with God, because we know our time is limited; we have more days behind us than there are before us.

Enjoy God's Gift of Your Unique Grandchildren

I came across this quote a few months back and thought when it snowed, I'd share it with you all. So, since it is snowing out my window this morning, I'm happy to share it with you.

Each of our grandchildren are wonderful, precious gifts from the hand of God! Not only did He gift us with each grandchild, but He made each of them unique and special in their own way. Our grandchildren may all look alike, or you may have one with brown hair, one with red hair and one who has blond hair (as do I).

Footprints in the Snow

I woke up this morning to discover snow on the ground. As I sit here in my cozy living room sipping coffee, outside my windows the snow continues to fall - there is probably about two inches on the bushes, grass and tree limbs so far. This, of course, means it is time to remember how the words I say, the things I do, the example I set all leave "footprints" in the lives of my precious grandsons. I most sincerely want to be faithful, so my "footprints", "lead them to believe."

Thankful Thursdays - Give Thanks for God is Good - Psalms 107:1

Don't you just love this verse! We are able to be thankful, no matter what is going on around us, for two reasons . . .

Introduce Our Grandchildren to the Real People in the Bible

One of the important things we do to hand down the faith is to introduce our grandchildren to the real people in the Bible. But, we need to be careful we do not teach about them as just a "Bible story". These were real people who really lived. These people were just like us - they had things which made them happy and things which made them sad. They had to make the choice - just as do we - to love, know and follow God, or not. When our grandchildren learn about the people in the Bible, they are better able to understand what it looks like for them to choose to love, know and follow God.

Connections & So Much For Which to be Thankful

There are many wonderful things about this time of year . . . celebrating Thanksgiving and focusing upon the many things for which we have to be thankful, enjoying time together with the ones we love, all the joy which comes with celebrating Jesus' birth, taking family photos, enjoying established family traditions and beginning new family traditions. The Thanksgiving and Christmas times of year are truly wonderful times for many reasons.

Hand Down the Faith with "Mystery Bags" - Candy Cane Hunt

One of the fun things we grandmas are able to do is to start new family traditions! Today for our "Mystery Bag" idea, I have the info you need to begin a new family tradition which is fun for any age of grandchild, whether they live near or far.

For this "Mystery Bag", you will need the following items . . .
