Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Boxes - Walk Through Paper - When Life Seems Impossible, Trust God

Our grandchildren and grown children are going to face challenging times in their lives; just as we have. Today I have a fun, yet simple, project for the Mystery Bag with which you will be able to amaze your grandchildren and use to teach an important truth.

Make the Most of the Years You are Given

From time to time you may have days which feel long . . . we all do now and then, but the years truly are short and they do fly by. I know for me it seems like it was just yesterday when my own two children were young; now they are grown and my son has young sons of his own. It does not seem possible I am a grandma, but the truth is the years certainly just flew by.

Hug the Ones You Love with Your Prayers

While our daily prayers certainly may include prayers for specific concerns and needs which may arise - tests, health, relationships, etc., when we pray we need to pray for our grown children and grandchildren to love, know and walk with God.

God's Faithful, Forever Love

These verses from Psalms 103 are encouraging whether you have adult children and grandchildren who love, know and walk with God, or some who do not. God promises His faithful love lasts forever and reaches from us to those who come after us.

Model & Teach What it Looks Like to Trust God Completely

If you and/or someone you know and love is going through something difficult, take heart from the wisdom in this quote from Corrie Ten Boom. No matter what, we are absolutely able to be sure God never makes a mistake - not ever! And, one day we will see the answers to the "whys". God knows what He is doing - and He promises to bring blessing from the difficulties we face in this life.

Hold Tightly to God at All Times

At all times, but especially when sad and difficult things happen in our lives and the lives of others we love, know and/or hear about, it is essential for us to cling to the promises of God. We must hold tightly to what we know is true - even when we may not understand.

Take Heart! The Holy Spirit Makes Sure You Get Heard!

Today I'd like to encourage you with this quote from Max Lucado - None of us pray as much as we should, but all of us pray more than we think, because the Holy Spirit turns our sighs into petitions and our tears into entreaties. He makes sure you get heard!

Prayer for Grandchildren to Know God's Faithful Love - Psalms 92

I have a new Scripture blessing my husband and I are going to be using with our grandsons at our house. I really love this passage with its focus upon God's faithful love for us, and am happy to share it with you today.

Enjoy What Is Before it Isn't Anymore

If you have young grandchildren, do all you are able to do to connect with them, to build a strong healthy relationship with them and to hand down the faith to them while they are young. As we all know, children grow up so very quickly - what we say and do while they are young absolutely matters.

Take Heart - God ALWAYS Keeps His Promises

I find these verses so encouraging - God says we do not have to be afraid, because He promises to pour out His Spirit on our offspring and to bless our descendants. There is nothing I want more than to see my grown children and grandchildren make the choice to believe in Jesus and then to love, know and walk with Him. Nothing more important. This goes for family members and friends I love as well.

God will NEVER Fail Us or the Ones We Love

I love this quote from George Müller. It challenges me to pray with the faith God will do what He says He will do - He will hear me, listen to me and He will answer.

Trust God for the "Impossible"

You may find handing down the faith to be something which comes easily, you may feel like you know what to do to hand down the faith; or you may find it is confusing, difficult and even at times feels like an "impossible" thing for you to do with your grandchildren.

You may find you and the ones you love are in a "good place". Life is progressing and everyone is moving forward in their walk with God. Or, you may be facing difficult, discouraging or even "impossible" things which leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Tell Those You Love Like God Tells Us

Happy Valentine's Day! On this day when we tend to think about the ones we love, you may find it encouraging to know God thinks about His great love for you, a lot! We know this, because the word "love" appears 310 times in the King James Bible, 348 times in the New American Standard Bible, 551 times in the New International Version and 538 times in the New Revised Standard Version. Oh yes, God loves us and He is not shy about telling us of His great love for us!

Use Affirming Words & Light Up the Lives of the Ones You Love

I love this quote from Gary Smalley! As we interact with our grandchildren, let us always keep in mind the power of our words - they are able to build up, or tear down. They are able to encourage, or discourage. They are able to communicate love, or show a lack of love. They are able to show great value, or a lack of value.

Pray Psalms 34 for the Ones You Love

Today is Valentine's Day and for many of us grandmas (and grandpas, parents), it is a day to celebrate our love for the children we love with cards, treats or small gifts. Enjoy celebrating with them, but remember to do the thing which matters the most - pray for the ones you love. Prayer is the best gift you will give them; and if you do not pray for them, who will?

God Brings Beauty From Our Storms

Last week we experienced a significant ice storm. While the trees were beautiful covered in ice, many branches came down leaving more than 200,000 people without power.

However; along with losing power, the ice did something amazing. I live in apple country - there are many, many apple orchards throughout this area and not far from where I live. One local farmer, Andrew Sietsema discovered ice apples in his orchard.

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Boxes - Origami Boxes & Hearts & a Service Project

My church has a large Special Needs Ministry and so, my grandsons are going to do a project tonight to show love as people arrive for their Wednesday evening service. We have been making origami boxes and hearts - each box will have one heart in it - the boys will give one to each person as they arrive; along with a smile and the encouragement - "God loves you!"

Let the Children Come

Remember, Jesus wants your grandchildren to come to Him, so all you do to hand down the faith is what Jesus wants you to do. Take time today to connect with your grandchildren - in person, on the phone, through email or facetime and share Jesus' love with them!

Grandparents & Parents Absolutely Are Relevant & Make a Difference

God's plan for children is for them to grow up being influenced and taught by the generations who came before them - by their parents and grandparents. While a focused Children's Ministry and Youth Ministry are able to help in the handing down of the faith, the primary responsibility - and the ones who are able to make the biggest impact - lies with the parents and grandparents.

Pray Until the Answer Comes

Do you have something for which, or more importantly, someone for whom you are praying; and have been for quite some time? Do you wonder if an answer will ever come? If so, today I would like to encourage you with some of the "Prayer History" of George Müller.

Children are Gifts from the Hand of God

I love this quote! Children are gifts from God and they do add meaning and purpose to our lives.

I often tell my grandsons how they are gifts from the hand of God and how I know God gives the best gifts, because He gave them to me as my grandsons.

Believe the Truth About Prayer

When do you pray? Is prayer an essential part of each day for you, or is it something you "tag" on to your day and put wherever you happen to think about it? I have friends who are serious prayer warriors, but I spent most of my life struggling with prayer; how to pray and praying daily. I understand what it feels like to think my prayers do not even make it past the roof of my house. But, this is not the truth. My prayers make it to the most important, "place" . . . they make it to the ears of God. Every, single time.

If Satan is able to deceive us into believing prayer is too hard, we do not know how to pray, God does not hear our prayers and we do not have time to pray, then we will not pray. We need to focus upon the truth when it comes to prayer and the following is the truth about prayer . . .

Equip the Ones You Love to Focus on & Remember God's Word All Week

When it comes to handing down the faith, we pray for our grown children and grandchildren. We remember and tell them how God has been faithful to us in the past and how He is faithful to us today when we trust in Him. We are focused upon connecting our day-in-day-out lives to God and His love for us. We share passages from God's Word and read it together. These are all ways we are able to hand down the faith.

But, we also need to be sure we provide opportunities for our grandchildren (and even our grown children) to connect with, think about and watch for God's great love for them. One way we are able to do this is by choosing a verse/passage each week which we will pray for them and then simplify it into a prayer/blessing which they are able to make into a picture or poster to hang on the wall at your home and their own. Just like the tassels God told His people to put on their robes, putting these pictures/posters on the walls will serve to remind them each time they see it to pray the passage and think about the application.

For example, if you use the prayer from Psalms 28:7, which I shared in the previous post, a picture/poster might be worded as follows . . .

Trust God - He is Your Strength

Take time to pray this verse for your grandchildren and your grown children today: pray they will find their strength in God and learn to put their trust in Him. Then share this verse with them - in person, through email, by the phone or facetime.

Share how God has been your strength and why you trust Him and help them learn to watch for how God gives them strength - as they do their trust in Him will grow!

Hand Down the Faith with a Sticky-Note Bible Tool!

Two of my grandsons are old enough to begin reading the Bible on their own, so I'm giving them some of those narrow strip sticky notes to use them to mark when they read a verse which they do not understand. Then, when they are at my house, they will be able to ask their poppa or I what the verse is talking about.

Watch for & Share God's Grace, Compassion & Love

Don't you just love this verse! Take a moment today to stop and think about how God shows His grace, compassion and love to you.

Remember; & Help the Ones You Love Remember as Well

I love these verses from Numbers 15. As you read them, you may wonder why I love them. The reason is because they show me how well God knows me; and how He helps me be able to make the best choices.

These verses show where God told His people to wear tassels on the corners of their clothes - and they were to continue to do this, "throughout the generations to come." Why did God tell them to do this? It was not because God wanted to go into the fashion industry. It was because God knew them.

Stumbles Do Not Stop God's Love

One of the primary focuses of our prayers for our children and grandchildren is for them to make the choice to believe in and follow Jesus. When they do, while the Bible says there is rejoicing among the angels in Heaven, I am convinced a grandma (and grandpa, too) certainly rejoices just as much, if not more than the angels!

We rejoice, greatly, but our prayers do not end. They just change in focus. The ones we love are going to face challenges and difficult times in their lives. They will need to make all kinds of choices - some, they will choose wisely, some they will not.

Joy is From God & He Never Fails

Aren't we so thankful our joy is not dependent upon the things we experience in our day-in-day-out lives! Joy is something we, and our children and grandchildren are able to experience in the blessings and in the challenges of life, because joy depends upon God and He never fails.

Hand Down the Faith So Grandchildren Do Not Give Up

Handing down the faith means telling our grandchildren the truth - God loves them, He is always with them, He hears, listens to and answers their prayers and they are truly able to know and walk with Him.

God NEVER Changes!

Aren't we so thankful no matter what happens in the world around us and in our own lives we are able to be absolutely certain God NEVER changes! He loved us yesterday, He loves us today, He will love us tomorrow.

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - Make Harmonicas & a Joyful Noise to the Lord

Valentine's Day is next week, so I thought it would be fun to find some different ideas our grandchildren could try for unique, memorable Valentines and a fun Mystery Bag project as well. Of course this meant I started by browsing through Pinterest . . . where I came upon an idea which fit what I was looking for . . . interesting, unique and fun for the boys to make!

Pray for the Ones You Love to Hold Tightly to God

As Christian grandparents who are purposeful and focused upon handing down the faith, the most important thing to us for our children and grandchildren is for them to make the choice to believe in Jesus. This is what we pray for and the reason we hand down the faith.

Once they put their faith in Jesus, it is our prayer for them to make the choice to love, know and follow God. We want them to hold tightly to God as they experience blessings and when they go through the challenges life brings their way.

Consider making Deuteronomy 31:6 your prayer for the ones you love this week . . .

Express Your Love in Powerful Ways All Year Long

February 14th is a day each year where we tend to think about the people in our lives who we love. We may even give them a gift to show our love in a tangible way.

But making a determined and purposeful commitment to expressing our love in meaningful ways all year long is far, far more important than talking about or even showing love on this one day each year. When it comes to your grandchildren do not hold back on regularly telling them how much you love them. Consider the following ideas all year long . . .

You Have an Awesome Power - Use it Well & Often

This quote is absolutely true. You have an awesome power to speak blessing into the lives of others - especially the lives of your children and grandchildren.

Trust God, Experience His Peace & Hand it Down

I grew up in a time when each Sunday in church we sang the old hymns; It Is Well With My Soul, The Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, Just As I Am, Blessed Assurance – old songs where the lyrics were sound and they challenged and encouraged us in our walk with God. I loved these songs then – and still love them today.
I also love the newer praise songs, but today I want to share one of my favorite hymns with you, and some thoughts about how these lyrics encourage grandparents. Before I do, here’s some background on the lyricist – Frances Havergal.

Grandchildren Need their Grandparents

I love this quote from Jay Kesler - it is so true. Our grandchildren need us; they need their grandparents and what we are able to do for them by giving them something stable to which they are able to hold tightly.

Prayer for the Second Half of the School Year

Father God,
We pray for our grandchildren during this second half of the school year. Let them be as enthusiastic today as they were the first day of school. Keep their minds attentive, free from distractions. When their thoughts wander, please redirect their focus to the task at hand.

Speak the Truth to Your Grandchildren

I shared this, "Speak the Truth to Your Grandchildren" last year, but thought I'd share it again for those of you who did not see it the first time and as a reminder to those who did.

Wait & Trust God to Answer

Don't you just love this quote from Elisabeth Elliot! What a wonderful reminder. While there are times when we are able to experience being able to see God answer our prayers in a "timely" fashion, there are also times when we need to wait . . . and wait and wait.

You are Able to Start Your Family's "Faith History"

A couple days ago I wrote about wonderful memories from childhood of family get-togethers and handing down the faith. While many of us have such wonderful memories, not all do. Whether it was due to a divorce, death, abuse, violence or some other thing there are those who do not have wonderful memories of growing up; and the memories they do have they would rather forget.

If this describes you, first of all I'd like to say, whatever it is you experienced, it was not your fault. Sometimes people know this, but having it said to them is a powerful and necessary thing. It was not your fault; this is the truth.

Leave a Legacy as Someone Who "Seasons" Your Speech

We have completed the first month of our new year - for me, as I live in West Michigan, it has been a chilly start . . . at least this past week has been. The start of a new year is often a time for us to stop and think about the things we do, the words we say and any changes we might like to make . . . sadly, most "New Year's Resolutions" we make are all too quickly forgotten. I would, however, like to encourage you to consider making . . . and most certainly keeping . . . the following "resolution"; let "Your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person." (Colossians 4:6 - NIV)

While I realize this verse is talking about how we interact with those who do not believe in Jesus, I do believe the principle certainly applies to the way we talk to and with everyone!

Love = Grace in Action

Valentines Day is just two weeks away . . . this is a wonderful time to think about how you show love to your grandchildren. So . . . what is love, really? It is more than a "feeling", it is an "action".
"God so loved the world that He gave"! (John 3:16)
This is what love is, really. It is grace in action. God loved us enough to give us grace . . . He forgave us! He is our Example. It is a powerful thing for us as grandmas - and grandpas/parents, too, to follow this example and show grace to the children we love, because when we do, we are showing love.

We need to remember to show this grace at all times, but especially when our grandchildren do something wrong - as all children, no matter how sweet and adorable and wonderful they are - will do. So what does this look like? Well . . .
