Set the Example as a "Legacy-Passer"

I love this quote from Cathy Jacobs - one of our Grandmas with Heart. We grandmas are, "legacy passers" (and so are grandpas and parents, too). Whether our grandchildren are young or older, it will not be long before they are the ones who will be handing down the faith - passing the legacy to their own children. It is essential for us to set an example of what this looks like, so they will know what to do and how to do it when they have children they love.

God's Promises Are For Us & Our Descendants

I am so thankful for this verse from Isaiah 59 and take such comfort in God's promise. If you have grown children and/or grandchildren who are not walking with God, be encouraged; God promises to never leave us and He promises His Words will always be with us, our children, grandchildren and generations to come. Hold tightly to this truth and trust God to do as He has promised.

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - the Unpoppable Balloon - Trust God Always

I have a really fun Mystery Bag project for you today which is sure to amaze your grandchildren, of any age; and give you a wonderful opportunity to talk with them about trusting God even when their circumstances seem impossible.

You will need . . .

Let Them Know

My grandsons are blessed to be loved by their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and extended family. They know they are dearly loved, but they still hear it; often! Along with telling them I love them, I am also intentional about letting them know God loves them even more than do I, because, as they grow up, I know life can be - and often times is - uncertain. No matter what happens I want them to know they are loved by people and by God.

God Loves & Values Your Grandchildren & You, Too

I love this quote from Max Lucado. It is true in regards to our grandchildren - make sure they hear this from you, often! Make sure your grandchildren get their sense of value from you, and most importantly, from God. Do not let this world influence them as to how and where they are able to find their value. Be certain they know they are so very valuable to you and to God; not because of anything they do, but simply because God loves and created them.

God Has a Purpose for Our Grandchildren & for Us

As grandmas (and grandpas, too) we love our grandchildren with our all. We know without doubt they are some of the most important people in our lives. We are absolutely convinced our grandchildren are highly significant to us and we know they are significant to God as well.

Tell Your Grandchildren About the Dark Clouds & the Joy of Sunshine

We all have difficult times in our lives. We all deal with disappointment, sadness, pain, grief and just the confusion which comes with these things. But, we do not have to let these difficult times push us away from God. No! We are able to let them pull us closer to Him instead, and when we pull closer to Him, we will find His peace, comfort, love and joy!

Be a Difference-Maker . . . Pray

Have you "hugged" your grandchildren, grown children and others you know and love today with your prayers? Last week I wrote about how when you pray for the ones you love, you are giving them a "hug" (you will find it at this link.) I said; "Give the ones you love a daily hug - hug them with your prayers!"

Take Your Concerns & Joys to God

Take your concerns and joys to God in prayer; and model this for your grandchildren. God does want us - and them - to do this and He promises to hear, listen to and answer our prayers! If it matters to you, it matters to God. Teach this to your grandchildren - and consider starting a "Prayer Journal" where you all are able to record your requests and how God answers, so you are able to see and remember God's faithfulness in your lives.
Consider making these verses from Psalm 145 your prayer this week . . .

Trust God to Put You & the Ones You Love Back Together

Have you ever felt like the pieces of your life just do not "fit" together? Have you ever felt like there was a "piece missing"? Have you ever wanted God to, "put the pieces of your life back together"? Well, if you have - or even if you have not - this passage from Psalms 86:10b-17 (The Message) is sure to brighten your day.

Prayer to be Christ-Like

Heavenly Father,

We long to be Christ-like parents and grandparents. But, when we take an objective look in the mirror, we don't like what we see. Help us to loosen the grip on our selfish ways, sinful desires and need to control. Let the old Adam within us be crucified, so, “it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us” (Galatians 2:20).

Trust God in the Here and Now

When I read a book, I read the first chapter or two and then the last chapter or two. I want to know who the characters are, and how the book ends before I read the book. While I have read the last Book of the Bible, and know the "ending", in our day-to-day life, we do not know what is just around the bend. We do not know what will happen on the "next pages", let alone the next chapter. But, we are able to hold tightly to and trust God, because He knows and He loves us.

Share How God Sustains & Gives You Grace

How has God sustained you throughout your life? How has He answered your prayers? How has He showed His grace and love to you? Share these things with your grandchildren. When they are able to hear and see how God has sustained you, they will be better able to believe He will do the same for them and see how He does!

Live So Those You Love "Catch" Your Faith

It matters for us to share with our grandchildren (and our grown children) how God has been faithful to us in the past. It matters for us to tell them how God is faithful to us today. It matters for us to share with them why we believe God will be faithful to us in the future. All of these things do matter. As grandmas (and grandpas) we are the second most influential people in the lives of our grandchildren, so we do need to speak truth and hand down the faith as we share about God's faithfulness in our lives.

Watch For, Remember & Tell How God Does Not Disappoint

This world often leaves us feeling disappointed, however; when we put our hope in God, we will never be disappointed. In the blessings and challenges of life, we are able to know and experience how God is the Lord when we put our hope in Him, when we do, we will never be disappointed.

God Cares

When we have concerns, when we face challenges, difficulties, sad times and even pain, it is easy for us to think God does not care; but this is not the truth. God does care. He cares about everything and everyone we care about. In all times, but especially the difficult times, we need to hold to the truth - God cares and He loves us.

Listen to God

Five years ago as I picked up my grandson from school, we saw a mom with very colorful, blue hair. I asked my grandson if I should dye my hair blue . . . thinking he would say, "definitely!" But, he surprised me by saying, with great passion, "No, grandma! You should NOT! You should dye all your hair white, because you are a grandma." I was happy to know my grandson liked my white hair and not only accepted it as part of being a grandma, but found comfort in it as well.

Do Something Which Lasts

As grandmas (and grandpas, too) we are the second most influential people in the lives of our precious grandchildren. We absolutely are able to do things, many things, which last beyond our lifetime - so choose to do those things which make a big difference!

Model Holding to God in Difficult Times

In our lives there have been times when people have let us down. When they did not show integrity by doing what they said they would do. Times when we did not do what we tried to do. We have doubtless experienced difficult times in our lives. But, it is essential as we go through these times for us to hold tightly to God. Do not blame Him for the failures of others, or for the times we do not do all we had hoped.

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Boxes - Walk Through Paper - When Life Seems Impossible, Trust God

Our grandchildren and grown children are going to face challenging times in their lives; just as we have. Today I have a fun, yet simple, project for the Mystery Bag with which you will be able to amaze your grandchildren and use to teach an important truth.

Make the Most of the Years You are Given

From time to time you may have days which feel long . . . we all do now and then, but the years truly are short and they do fly by. I know for me it seems like it was just yesterday when my own two children were young; now they are grown and my son has young sons of his own. It does not seem possible I am a grandma, but the truth is the years certainly just flew by.

Hug the Ones You Love with Your Prayers

While our daily prayers certainly may include prayers for specific concerns and needs which may arise - tests, health, relationships, etc., when we pray we need to pray for our grown children and grandchildren to love, know and walk with God.

God's Faithful, Forever Love

These verses from Psalms 103 are encouraging whether you have adult children and grandchildren who love, know and walk with God, or some who do not. God promises His faithful love lasts forever and reaches from us to those who come after us.

Model & Teach What it Looks Like to Trust God Completely

If you and/or someone you know and love is going through something difficult, take heart from the wisdom in this quote from Corrie Ten Boom. No matter what, we are absolutely able to be sure God never makes a mistake - not ever! And, one day we will see the answers to the "whys". God knows what He is doing - and He promises to bring blessing from the difficulties we face in this life.

Hold Tightly to God at All Times

At all times, but especially when sad and difficult things happen in our lives and the lives of others we love, know and/or hear about, it is essential for us to cling to the promises of God. We must hold tightly to what we know is true - even when we may not understand.

Take Heart! The Holy Spirit Makes Sure You Get Heard!

Today I'd like to encourage you with this quote from Max Lucado - None of us pray as much as we should, but all of us pray more than we think, because the Holy Spirit turns our sighs into petitions and our tears into entreaties. He makes sure you get heard!

Prayer for Grandchildren to Know God's Faithful Love - Psalms 92

I have a new Scripture blessing my husband and I are going to be using with our grandsons at our house. I really love this passage with its focus upon God's faithful love for us, and am happy to share it with you today.

Enjoy What Is Before it Isn't Anymore

If you have young grandchildren, do all you are able to do to connect with them, to build a strong healthy relationship with them and to hand down the faith to them while they are young. As we all know, children grow up so very quickly - what we say and do while they are young absolutely matters.

Take Heart - God ALWAYS Keeps His Promises

I find these verses so encouraging - God says we do not have to be afraid, because He promises to pour out His Spirit on our offspring and to bless our descendants. There is nothing I want more than to see my grown children and grandchildren make the choice to believe in Jesus and then to love, know and walk with Him. Nothing more important. This goes for family members and friends I love as well.

God will NEVER Fail Us or the Ones We Love

I love this quote from George Müller. It challenges me to pray with the faith God will do what He says He will do - He will hear me, listen to me and He will answer.

Trust God for the "Impossible"

You may find handing down the faith to be something which comes easily, you may feel like you know what to do to hand down the faith; or you may find it is confusing, difficult and even at times feels like an "impossible" thing for you to do with your grandchildren.

You may find you and the ones you love are in a "good place". Life is progressing and everyone is moving forward in their walk with God. Or, you may be facing difficult, discouraging or even "impossible" things which leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Tell Those You Love Like God Tells Us

Happy Valentine's Day! On this day when we tend to think about the ones we love, you may find it encouraging to know God thinks about His great love for you, a lot! We know this, because the word "love" appears 310 times in the King James Bible, 348 times in the New American Standard Bible, 551 times in the New International Version and 538 times in the New Revised Standard Version. Oh yes, God loves us and He is not shy about telling us of His great love for us!

Use Affirming Words & Light Up the Lives of the Ones You Love

I love this quote from Gary Smalley! As we interact with our grandchildren, let us always keep in mind the power of our words - they are able to build up, or tear down. They are able to encourage, or discourage. They are able to communicate love, or show a lack of love. They are able to show great value, or a lack of value.

Pray Psalms 34 for the Ones You Love

Today is Valentine's Day and for many of us grandmas (and grandpas, parents), it is a day to celebrate our love for the children we love with cards, treats or small gifts. Enjoy celebrating with them, but remember to do the thing which matters the most - pray for the ones you love. Prayer is the best gift you will give them; and if you do not pray for them, who will?

God Brings Beauty From Our Storms

Last week we experienced a significant ice storm. While the trees were beautiful covered in ice, many branches came down leaving more than 200,000 people without power.

However; along with losing power, the ice did something amazing. I live in apple country - there are many, many apple orchards throughout this area and not far from where I live. One local farmer, Andrew Sietsema discovered ice apples in his orchard.

Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Boxes - Origami Boxes & Hearts & a Service Project

My church has a large Special Needs Ministry and so, my grandsons are going to do a project tonight to show love as people arrive for their Wednesday evening service. We have been making origami boxes and hearts - each box will have one heart in it - the boys will give one to each person as they arrive; along with a smile and the encouragement - "God loves you!"

Let the Children Come

Remember, Jesus wants your grandchildren to come to Him, so all you do to hand down the faith is what Jesus wants you to do. Take time today to connect with your grandchildren - in person, on the phone, through email or facetime and share Jesus' love with them!

Grandparents & Parents Absolutely Are Relevant & Make a Difference

God's plan for children is for them to grow up being influenced and taught by the generations who came before them - by their parents and grandparents. While a focused Children's Ministry and Youth Ministry are able to help in the handing down of the faith, the primary responsibility - and the ones who are able to make the biggest impact - lies with the parents and grandparents.

Pray Until the Answer Comes

Do you have something for which, or more importantly, someone for whom you are praying; and have been for quite some time? Do you wonder if an answer will ever come? If so, today I would like to encourage you with some of the "Prayer History" of George Müller.

Children are Gifts from the Hand of God

I love this quote! Children are gifts from God and they do add meaning and purpose to our lives.

I often tell my grandsons how they are gifts from the hand of God and how I know God gives the best gifts, because He gave them to me as my grandsons.

Believe the Truth About Prayer

When do you pray? Is prayer an essential part of each day for you, or is it something you "tag" on to your day and put wherever you happen to think about it? I have friends who are serious prayer warriors, but I spent most of my life struggling with prayer; how to pray and praying daily. I understand what it feels like to think my prayers do not even make it past the roof of my house. But, this is not the truth. My prayers make it to the most important, "place" . . . they make it to the ears of God. Every, single time.

If Satan is able to deceive us into believing prayer is too hard, we do not know how to pray, God does not hear our prayers and we do not have time to pray, then we will not pray. We need to focus upon the truth when it comes to prayer and the following is the truth about prayer . . .

Equip the Ones You Love to Focus on & Remember God's Word All Week

When it comes to handing down the faith, we pray for our grown children and grandchildren. We remember and tell them how God has been faithful to us in the past and how He is faithful to us today when we trust in Him. We are focused upon connecting our day-in-day-out lives to God and His love for us. We share passages from God's Word and read it together. These are all ways we are able to hand down the faith.

But, we also need to be sure we provide opportunities for our grandchildren (and even our grown children) to connect with, think about and watch for God's great love for them. One way we are able to do this is by choosing a verse/passage each week which we will pray for them and then simplify it into a prayer/blessing which they are able to make into a picture or poster to hang on the wall at your home and their own. Just like the tassels God told His people to put on their robes, putting these pictures/posters on the walls will serve to remind them each time they see it to pray the passage and think about the application.

For example, if you use the prayer from Psalms 28:7, which I shared in the previous post, a picture/poster might be worded as follows . . .

Trust God - He is Your Strength

Take time to pray this verse for your grandchildren and your grown children today: pray they will find their strength in God and learn to put their trust in Him. Then share this verse with them - in person, through email, by the phone or facetime.

Share how God has been your strength and why you trust Him and help them learn to watch for how God gives them strength - as they do their trust in Him will grow!

Hand Down the Faith with a Sticky-Note Bible Tool!

Two of my grandsons are old enough to begin reading the Bible on their own, so I'm giving them some of those narrow strip sticky notes to use them to mark when they read a verse which they do not understand. Then, when they are at my house, they will be able to ask their poppa or I what the verse is talking about.

Watch for & Share God's Grace, Compassion & Love

Don't you just love this verse! Take a moment today to stop and think about how God shows His grace, compassion and love to you.

Remember; & Help the Ones You Love Remember as Well

I love these verses from Numbers 15. As you read them, you may wonder why I love them. The reason is because they show me how well God knows me; and how He helps me be able to make the best choices.

These verses show where God told His people to wear tassels on the corners of their clothes - and they were to continue to do this, "throughout the generations to come." Why did God tell them to do this? It was not because God wanted to go into the fashion industry. It was because God knew them.

Stumbles Do Not Stop God's Love

One of the primary focuses of our prayers for our children and grandchildren is for them to make the choice to believe in and follow Jesus. When they do, while the Bible says there is rejoicing among the angels in Heaven, I am convinced a grandma (and grandpa, too) certainly rejoices just as much, if not more than the angels!

We rejoice, greatly, but our prayers do not end. They just change in focus. The ones we love are going to face challenges and difficult times in their lives. They will need to make all kinds of choices - some, they will choose wisely, some they will not.

Joy is From God & He Never Fails

Aren't we so thankful our joy is not dependent upon the things we experience in our day-in-day-out lives! Joy is something we, and our children and grandchildren are able to experience in the blessings and in the challenges of life, because joy depends upon God and He never fails.

Hand Down the Faith So Grandchildren Do Not Give Up

Handing down the faith means telling our grandchildren the truth - God loves them, He is always with them, He hears, listens to and answers their prayers and they are truly able to know and walk with Him.

God NEVER Changes!

Aren't we so thankful no matter what happens in the world around us and in our own lives we are able to be absolutely certain God NEVER changes! He loved us yesterday, He loves us today, He will love us tomorrow.
