God Teaches All Our Children/Grandchildren

I love this verse from Isaiah 54; I find it so encouraging as I focus upon handing down the faith to my grandsons. While I try to find engaging and interesting ways to teach my grandsons and hand down the faith, I know God's ways of teaching them are the best.

But what does it look like for God to teach my grandsons - or any of us? Consider the following . . .

God teaches them from His Word. When I read the Bible to my grandsons, God uses the words and His Spirit to prompt questions, build interest, and cause them to understand - to teach them. When my grandsons pick up a Bible and read it on their own (as my oldest grandson did this weekend at my house - filling my heart with joy to watch him do this), again, God uses the words and His Spirit to prompt questions, build interest, and cause them to understand - to teach them.

God also teaches them from the world around us. When my grandsons see how amazing, intricate and perfect creation is, they tell me it had to be God. They see the plants, animals and learn about space and they know God made it all. I tell them God knew what He was doing when He created them, and He did not make any mistakes; and they remember. When they learn something new, or do something they particularly enjoy, they tell me they are so glad God made them to do those things - and they know God did not make a mistake! When we tell our grandchildren about some of the truly amazing parts of creation - like the Carrier Crabs and Fire Urchins - and are quick to tell them God knew what He was doing when He created them, and He did not make any mistakes, God is able to teach them from His creation about who He is.

God also uses difficult times and experiences in our lives to teach them. When our grandchildren go through these times; and they will, we are able to tell them about the difficult times in our lives and how God was with us through those times - like the time when God saved my grandparents from a tornado. When they learn to see God's "fingerprints" on their lives in the pleasant times and the challenging times, they will be able to learn very important lessons from God.

In Deuteronomy 8 God says He allows testing in our lives through difficult times, to see what is in our heart - whether we will choose to obey Him or not. Of course, God already knows what we will do before we are even born, but testing and difficult times are a way God uses to show us He is with us and we are able to make the choice to love and follow Him, no matter what. God uses difficult times and experiences in our lives to teach our grandchildren - and us as well.

These are just three ways God teaches the ones we love, but going back to Isaiah 54:13, I want us to be sure not to miss something important - actually three very important things. First, God says ALL of our children will be taught by Him. All of them! Our children and grandchildren who are walking with God will be taught by Him, as will the ones who are currently wandering. I find great comfort in this.

God also says HE is the one who will teach all our children. If I could choose to have anyone teach the ones I love, I would absolutely choose God. But I do not have to choose Him, because He has already made the choice, the decision to teach them. He is teaching them, now, today! While there are times my husband and I feel alone in teaching our grandsons, the truth is we are alone in teaching them - God is teaching them and He is the best Teacher ever.

God promises GREAT PEACE to all our children who are taught by Him. Whether they find this great peace from His Word, from seeing creation or from experiencing God's presence and help as they go through challenges and difficult times, this great peace is promised to them by God Himself.

Oh yes, there are excellent reasons for me to love this verse - I hope you find this verse and the reasons to be very encouraging to you today as you read through this post and read the verse.
