Grandparents Belong To & Impact the Future

Next week is my grandsons' last week of school . . . and I am confidently able to assure you, they are without a doubt ready for their summer break! I am ready for their break, too, as the boys will be spending time at my house this summer while their parents are at work. We will definitely have a fun summer!

So, with the last week of my grandsons' school year upon us, and likely the last or close to the last for your grandchildren as well, I thought it would be fun and interesting to spend time looking at some of the things Mr. Rogers (from Mister Roger's Neighborhood) said when he was alive.

First, please allow me to share a little of his history from his website. Did you know he was born in 1928 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, earned his bachelor's degree in music composition at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida in 1951 and went to work for NBC. He attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Child Development, graduated from the Seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1963. They asked him to continue his work with children and families through the mass media and he created Mister Roger's Neighborhood. So, the many things he wrote and said through the years came from his experience as a husband, father and grandfather, his education and his faith.

He was calm, kind and encouraged children and adults alike to be the same. His "sayings" have a lot of wisdom in them.

I especially like the one I chose for today; "The presence of a grandparent confirms parents were indeed, little once, too, and people who are little can grow to be big, become parents and one day even have grandchildren of their own. So often we think of grandparents as belonging to the past; but in this important way, grandparents, for young children, belong to the future."

Don't you just love this! We grandparents belong to the future! And, what we do impacts the future; this is why it is so important for us to hand down the faith!
