These are NOT Our Job

As grandmas (and grandpas/ parents) we have a job from God. A very, very important job. The most important job we will ever do. This job is to hand down the faith to the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and generations yet unborn.

There are two main components to this job, which we will look at in the next few posts, but since it is not uncommon for us to take on jobs which are not ours to take, in this post we will look at those "jobs" which are NOT ours to take.

If we have children and/or grandchildren who do not believe in Jesus or who are not walking with Him, we may try to convict them, make them feel guilty to get them to believe in and follow God. This is NOT our job. It is the job of the Holy Spirit to convict and we are not Him. Knowing it is not our job to "convict" our children and/or grandchildren is very freeing and leaves us in a place where we are able to share God's love and grace and leave the convicting to Him - where it belongs.

We also may try to take the "job" of drawing our loved ones to God. Again, this is NOT our job. It is the job of Jesus - He came to this Earth to draw all people to Him. We are not able to draw our loved ones to God - we are able to irritate them and push them away, but we are not able to draw them to God; so once again, knowing it is not our job to "draw" our children and/or grandchildren to God is very freeing and leaves us in the place where we are able to share God's love and grace and leave the drawing to Him - where it belongs.

So, as you go through this day, spend some time talking with God - if you have tried to take on His job, admit it and ask Him to help you stop doing this. Make time to talk with your children and/or grandchildren and let them know you are sorry for trying to take on a job which was not yours to take and concentrate on building a strong, loving and grace-filled relationship with them.

Don't worry about the convicting and drawing of your children and/or grandchildren to God. He is more than able, and willing, to do His jobs and He knows how to do them. There is no one better to do these jobs, and truly, is there anyone else we would rather have do them? Let go of the jobs which are not yours to fulfill in the first place and focus on the jobs which are yours . . .
