Our Holy Calling & Responsibility

Don't you just love the sound of and thinking about how we, as grandparents, have a "holy calling"? Having a "calling" is a wonderful thing, but as grandparents we have not just a "calling", we have a "holy calling"! A "holy calling" sounds wonderful, special, exciting and like something we all want to have.

Well, as grandparents, we all have a "holy calling" from God and it is the most wonderful, special and exciting calling possible, because God has entrusted us, called us, to hand down the faith to the generations who follow us. What could possibly be more wonderful, special or exciting? What could we possibly want more than to see every child, grandchild, great-grandchild until Jesus returns make the choice to believe in Him? Absolutely a "holy calling" for sure.

Top 5 Reasons for Focusing our Grandchildren on Receiving at Christmas

Yesterday I shared my Top 5 Reasons for Focusing our Grandchildren on Giving at Christmas, but today I want to stop to think about the Top 5 Reasons for Focusing our Grandchildren on Receiving at Christmas . . . yes, I said; "receiving"!

At Christmas children - and adults, too - think quite a bit about the gifts they would like to receive, but in God's Word we find some of the most incredible gifts anyone could ever receive . . . and we read they are gifts God wants us to receive! Consider the following . . .

Top 5 Reasons for Focusing Our Grandchildren on Giving at Christmas!

“Christmas time is here. Happiness and cheer. Fun for all that children call, Their favorite time of the year!”
Ah, yes . . . Christmas time is here, or at least many believe so; we celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday, may have put up our Christmas trees and today people are out shopping for bargains. Christmas time is here and while children are likely to focus upon the gifts they hope to receive . . . as for many children it is their favorite time of year, I believe it is the ideal time to redirect their focus to giving to others! So . . . here are my Top Five Reasons for Focusing Our Grandchildren upon Giving at Christmas . . .

God's Never-Ending Love

I found this quote from Charles Spurgeon the other day and knew I had to share it with you. No matter what, our names are still written on God's heart and we will not lose Jesus' love.

This goes for the ones we love, too. If they have made the choice to believe in God, then according to John 10, no one is able to take them out of God's hand; no one is able to make them unloved by God.

Happy Thanksgiving

We Grandmas with Heart are so thankful for you and how you are handing faith to the generations who follow you. What you say and do makes such a great difference.

It is our great honor, delight and joy to be able to connect with you and share information, ideas and resources to equip and encourage you as you hand down the faith and we are so thankful to be able to do so.

Happy Thanksgiving from Grandmas with Heart!

Grateful For God's Good Gifts

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for us to stop and look at the world around us and for us to stop and think about all the many blessings for which we are able to be thankful. Many people - whether they believe in God, or not, celebrate Thanksgiving and may even share things for which they are thankful; but not necessarily items for which they are thankful to God.

But when we look at the world around us, we are able to see solid, strong, compelling evidence for us to believe God is real; for us to believe in God's goodness, grace and love. As Philip Yancey said; "All good things on Earth are God's; every good gift is from above."

So take a look around. Especially notice the evidence of God's good gifts in creation and be thankful. Share with your children and grandchildren how creation shows God's goodness and take time to be grateful, both for the created world and for the Creator. We are most blessed.

Pray with Boundless Confidence & Joyous Certainty

Many of us may think prayer is, "complicated". We hear people pray who use fancy words, lots of words, "holy-sounding" words and we think it is just too complicated for us to pray, and while we may want to pray, we find ourselves praying infrequently - and feeling terribly guilty about this.

But prayer is not complicated; it is talking with God and we are able to talk with Him the same way we talk with the people we know. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said; "It matters little . . . how many words we use." Just talk with God. Tell Him the things on your heart. Talk with Him about your concerns for the ones you love. Remember; "What matters is the faith which lays hold on God, knowing He knows our needs before we even ask Him."

God is at Work in Our Lives in Big Ways, Too

In my book, The DNA of Grandparents & Parents Who Hand Down the Faith, I am blessed to be able to share the account of a friend from Egypt and how God opened the way for him and his family to come to the USA. It is a powerful account of how God works in big ways today.

Like me, you may hear accounts like my friend's and be amazed - there is much about which to be amazed in his account for sure - but look at your own life and wonder where God is. You may think God does not do big things in your life; or at least may not do big things very often.

Be Thankful & Express Gratitude All Year

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so we are all likely to be focusing upon the things for which we are thankful. Of course we want our grandchildren/children to also focus upon being thankful as well.

But thanksgiving - the giving of thanks, the expressing of gratitude is something which we want to be part of our and their lives all year long. A thankful, grateful heart is a happy heart - and makes us a better person for others to be around as well.

Media Does Influence Our Grandchildren, But So Do We

For decades (about two and a half) I (Lynda Freeman) have been writing websites/blogs about Children's Ministry. From time to time on my Children's Ministry blog, I shared video clips from George Barna - he has so much insight as to what is happening in the world in which we, and the ones we love, live. Today I'd like to share one of his video clips with you. (You will find it at this link.) In this video George talks about the seven major influences in our lives - please take a minute to watch it.

Now, while he is talking about ministry in churches, think about what you just saw/heard in relation to you and your grandchildren. Consider the following . . .

Pray Often

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. - Mark 11:24

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. - John 15:7

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. - Jeremiah 33:3

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. - Colossians 4:2

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord. - Jeremiah 29:12-14

Today, November 25, 2019, through Friday, November 29, 2019 you are able to receive a Kindle copy of my book, Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Grandparents & Parents, Too! Just follow this link for all the information - it is a tool to help you pray for your walk with God and for the ones you love as well and the Kindle version is absolutely free this week.

There is Never a Moment When God is Not Thinking About You & Those You Love

You may be a committed prayer warrior who spends time every day talking with God on behalf of the ones you love and know. For you prayer may be as much a part of your life as breathing. But, you may be a person who struggles with praying. If this is you, take heart! While you may struggle with prayer, while you may find the day has slipped by and you did not stop to pray, take heart! God is always thinking about you!

We Have a Special Calling to Pray

We grandmas know being a grandma is a very special calling. We know there are many important responsibilities which come with being, "grandma". As grandma we are often one of the primary people who encourage, teach, love, influence, cuddle, laugh with, play with, and who are always there for our grandchildren. If we take our "job" and calling as grandma seriously, we are certain to make a lasting and powerful difference in the lives of our grandchildren.

Along with all the things mentioned above, one of the most important parts of our calling as grandma is for us to be prayer warriors for our grandchildren. As Elisabeth Elliot said; "A grandmother's special calling is to pray . . ." We not only need to pray for the ones we love, we are called to do so.

The Ones You Love are Watching

According to Dictionary (dot) com the meaning of the word "legacy" is . . .
"Anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor."
We will all hand down a "legacy" to the ones who come behind us, but we have to be intentional if it is going to be a legacy of character and faith. For us to hand down a legacy of character and faith, we have to first of all have a life which shows character and faith, because we are not able to hand down something which we do not already have.

Help the Children You Love Be a Blessing to Others All Year Long

Thanksgiving is just four days away and while it is the ideal opportunity to talk with and model to our grandchildren what it means to be thankful, a genuine heart filled with thankfulness is one which shows itself all year long.

Linda Ransom Jacobs is one of our Grandmas with Heart. She is the founder of Divorce Care 4 Kids and she wrote the following; "Did you know children who show appreciation are overall happier and have better attitudes, because they feel better about themselves? So bring on the gratefulness." (You will be able to read an article Linda wrote about this at the following link.)

Prayer for Grandchildren to be Aware of the Power of Their Words

Lord Jesus,
Please make our grandchildren aware of the power of their words. Let them realize their words, along with the tone in which their words are delivered, have the power to bless or curse.

Thanksgiving Tradition - Thankful Hand Prints

Thanksgiving is just a few days away and it provides a wonderful opportunity to engage your family in traditions you have observed throughout the years and to start new traditions as well. I wrote a few days about about my family's tradition of writing/ drawing something for which we are thankful on our Thanksgiving Table Cloth

Today I want to share with you another idea you could use to help your family think about being thankful for one another - all year long. For this project you will need . . .

Help the Children You Love Know, Experience & Believe the Power of Prayer

I have struggled with prayer all my life. I didn't know how to pray, so I didn't know how to help my daughter and son know how to pray. But, I have learned and I am committed to be intentional when it comes to helping my grandsons learn to pray.

This is important, no, it is essential if I want them to have a real walk with God, because to walk with God . . . really walk with God, my grandsons need to know how to talk with God, themselves. While they absolutely need to hear their poppa and I pray for them and they need to know we pray for them, these things are not enough. They have to be people who talk to God themselves.

Free Kindle Copy December 2-6, 2019 - Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Children

Grandmas with Heart started because we wanted to provide a free resource with information, ideas and tools by grandmas (because we believe grandmas have much to offer), for grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too!) On this blog we post at least twice a day, every day. We are committed to providing solid, useful, information to help you hand down the faith to the generations who come behind you, because this is what matters.

This blog is free - you do not have to sign up for it. As often as possible, I offer free Kindle copies of the books I write, because I know there are many who just do not have the budget to spend on books. I truly want everyone to be able to get and use these resources. I am always happy to make one of my books available for free on Kindle; this one is the one I'm most happy about. Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Children is unique. I know of no other book or resource which will do what this book will do - equip you to help the children you love (ages four -14) learn to talk with God by learning to pray the Psalms.

Pray For & With The Ones You Love

This quote from Michael Youssef puts it pretty clear - "If we fail as adults in praying for and praying with the next generation, then they will become spiritually unsure." This quote really opened my eyes. I do not want my grandsons to become spiritually unsure. I want them to grow up to be young men, then adults who know, love and walk with God.

I'm sure these are the same things you want for the children you love; but these things will not, "just happen". If we as grandparents/ parents fail to be intentional in praying for/with the children we love, if we fail to read God's Word with them, if we fail to tell them the "whys" - why they are able to believe God is real and trust His Word with confidence, if we fail to do these things, then it is very possible they will grow up to be spiritually unsure - or worse, walk away from their faith.

Hand Down the Faith with Generations Quest - Free November 24-29, 2019

Next week, November 24-29, 2019 you will be able to receive a unique resource created, developed and written by me; Lynda Freeman. Generations Quest is a digital tool which will provide you with one year of resources, ideas, activities and Bible reading schedules for you to use to engage your family of all ages and in all locations in reading, talking about and learning to live God's Word together.

When I want to do something with my grandsons to hand down the faith, I typically end up writing/developing the resources I need to do so. I want to help my grandsons learn to be people who read and live God's Word, but they are children, so I needed a resource which would engage them with activity and provide small "nuggets" of Scripture for us to all read each day. I did not find anything which did what I wanted, so I wrote what I wanted.

Do Not Stop - It Will Endure Forever

"ALL our pleasures and possessions are consigned to oblivion, but the legacy we leave for Christ will endure forever."

Psalm 78:4 - We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

Psalm 145:4 - One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

Be Thankful & Have Hope

As we draw closer to the day when we particularly think about being thankful for all our many blessings, take some time today to also think about how you have hope due to God's great faithfulness!

Hand Down a Strong Faith & Prayer History

Were you blessed to grow up in a home where your parents and/or grandparents taught you to pray by showing you how they prayed? Did the adults in your life take the time to pray for you (where you were able to hear them) and with you? Did they share with you what God's Word has to say about talking with God? Were you blessed to be able to pray with confidence for most of your life and find prayer a true source of joy and strength?

Or, did you struggle with prayer for at least a portion of your life; feeling as if your prayers hit the ceiling and then just bounced back to you? Was prayer a difficult thing for you to learn? Do you still struggle with praying consistently and praying focused and intentional prayers?

What do you want prayer to be like for the children you love?

Psalms 86 - A Prayer for a Heart From & Protected by God

Today, this week, the rest of this year and throughout next year as well, pray and ask God to protect your children's and  grandchildren's hearts and minds, so they will love and follow Him with all their heart. I pray this for my children and grandchildren and have been able to see how God answers this prayer over and over again!

Consider making Psalm 86 your prayer for your grandchildren, too! After our grandchildren making the choice to believe in Jesus, is there any more important thing for us to pray about for the ones we love?

Free on Kindle - Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Grandparents & Parents, Too!

In five days, on November 25, 2019, you will be able to download for free your kindle copy of Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Grandparents & Parents, Too! This book will guide you in praying passages in Psalms for yourself and for the people you love for 52 weeks. It makes an excellent book to add to your intentional grandparenting/ parenting resources as well as a gift which makes a difference for the parents and grandparents on your gift list. And, if you give the children on your gift list Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Children, you will all be able to pray together through the Psalms for an entire year - what an amazing year this would be fore sure!

Hand Down All the Parts of Your Faith History

I like this quote from Charles Spurgeon. Who of us never made a choice which we now regret when we look back? Sharing our Faith History - even the part where we may have not followed God so closely - is an important part of handing down the faith. When we share the choices we made which were wise, as well as those which were not, we open the door to having important conversations which are able to make a difference. Now, this doesn't mean you have to share every detail of choices you made which you regret, but letting your grandchildren know you are a real person with all your failures and successes will go far to encourage them - and help them learn to make wise choices.

Tell the "Whys" - God's Creation Shows Design & Purpose

As grandmas (and grandpas/ parents) who are serious about handing down the faith, we know we need to help the children we love learn to read God's Word, pray, go to church and live God's Word. There are many ways for us to do these things, but handing down the faith is absolutely our job - our God-given job.

Handing down the faith involves all these things, but it also includes something we may not think about - we need to be focused upon telling the "whys" . . . why we are able to believe God is real and trust His Word with confidence. We must teach our grandchildren/children from their youngest ages the truth about how there are solid reasons for us to believe in God and believe the Bible, because if we do not, a teacher, friend or someone will teach them not to do so at some point in their lives. If we do not give them solid reasons to believe, it is very possible at some point in their lives they will fall away, so make focusing upon and teaching the "whys" a priority. It matters.

Today I am so happy to share with you another "why" . . . because creation shows God's great design and creativity. The other day I saw on the news about how the Koala Bears are declining in the wild. I looked up information about the Koala online and learned some wonderful facts about them . . .

Much For Which to Be Thankful

When we think about being thankful, we often think of blessings and answers to prayer - all of which we have definite reason for which to be thankful. But, the difficult times of life, the painful times, the problems are not typically the things which come to mind as we share the things for which we are thankful. But, as Mr. Rogers said; "There's no normal life which is free of pain. It's the very wrestling with our problems which is able to be the impetus for our growth." As we prepare for Thanksgiving next week, give yourself time to consider those difficult, challenging, even painful things you have faced and how you were able to see God with you throughout. Consider planning to share how you are ever so thankful for those times and how God used them to help you grow.

Thanksgiving Tradition - Thankful Table Cloth

Thanksgiving is next week - do you have your menu planned? It is a wonderful time to sit down with family and think about all the things you have, the blessings God has given you over the previous year and express your thanks.

Do you have family traditions you observe each Thanksgiving? Maybe specific family recipes you prepare just for Thanksgiving? My family has been adding to our, "Thanksgiving Table Cloth" for many years, so today I thought I'd share the idea with you, so you have time to prepare if you would like to start a "Thanksgiving Table Cloth" of your own. You will need . . .

Show Them

If we want our grandchildren to grow to be people who read, love and live God's Word, we need to be people who read, love and live God's Word. We need to be sure they see us reading God's Word. We need to be sure they are able to tell by the things we say and the way we live we love and are serious about living God's Word. When they are able to see theses things, they will be better able to believe us when we tell them there is great value in them reading, loving and living God's Word.

Prayer to Shield Our Grandchildren From Immorality

Lord Jesus,
We intercede on behalf of our grandchildren, asking You to place a hedge of protection around them. Shield their hearts and minds from the depravity, which inundates our culture and threatens to steal their innocence.

Books & Resources to Help You Pray - Christmas Gifts Which Make a Difference

Over the past couple weeks, we have been sharing books/resources which will help you - and the ones you love - become, or grow, as prayer warriors. They are essential additions to your "tool kit" and will help you hand down the faith intentionally. They are also excellent choices to give as gifts to the people you know and love. These books have been written/ designed by a number of our Grandmas with Heart and a couple additional grandmas we know; we are very happy to let you know about these books.

You Are the Only You & God Has a Plan for Your Life

As we grow older, we often are unable to do things we once did. We may feel overwhelmed by the way there are likely fewer days before us than there are behind us and even feel a loss over things we wanted to do in our lifetime, but may not actually accomplish. These things may leave us wondering if we still have anything of value to offer to our family and the world around us.

Aging does often bring with it challenges and even difficulties, but regardless of what we are physically able to do, we are not an accident, we were not mass produced, we are deliberately planned, we are specifically gifted and lovingly positioned by God; the Master Craftsman.

Books to Equip & Encourage You & Christmas Gifts Which Make a Difference

Over the past couple weeks I have been sharing with you books/ resources (most written/ developed by some of our Grandmas with heart) which are essential for you to add to your own intentional grandparenting/ parenting "tool kit" and which make wonderful Christmas gifts for the children, parents and grandparents on your gift list. Today I want to go back over these books/resources and list them for you as resources which are "must haves" for your own personal equipping and which make excellent gifts for the grandparents/ parents/church leaders on your gift list. Tomorrow I will share the books/resources which will help you become, or grow as, a prayer warrior. Saturday I will share "tools" which are excellent resources for you to use with your grandchildren as you hand down the faith and then on Sunday I will share the books which are essential tools to give to your grandchildren/children.

I have had many, many grandparents and parents over my 43 years in Children's Ministry tell me they would hand down the faith, but they just do not know how to do it. Over the past two weeks I have shared with you books/resources which are written/designed to help you grow in your own walk with God and which equip you to know how to hand down the faith; today I am happy to draw attention to the books on our Christmas Gifts Which Make a Difference list which will do this for you.

Our God-Given Privilege

When we became parents, we knew we had a responsibility to hand faith to our children. We knew we were the people who needed to live faith at home, read God's Word and pray with our children, be sure they were involved in the Children's Ministry and then Youth Ministry at our church and encourage them to participate on mission trips. We knew this was what we needed to do as parents.

Christmas Gifts Which Make a Difference - Long-Distance Grandparenting

Over the past couple weeks I have recommended 16 books/resources for you to add to your intentional grandparenting/parenting "tool kit" as resources which will help equip you to hand down the faith to the ones you love. Today I'm sharing one final book, written by Wayne Rice;  Long-Distance Grandparenting. The title of this book may leave you thinking it is just for grandparents who live far from their grandchildren, and while it is absolutely packed with helpful information and ideas to help those grandparents who live far from the children they love, it is filled with information for all grandparents/parents; whether you live near or far from the children you love.

Christmas Gifts Which Make a Difference - Extreme Grandparenting

Today I'm very happy to share with you another excellent book which is filled with information to help you become a more effective grandparent and which makes a great Christmas gift for the grandparents you know. Extreme Grandparenting is this book and the authors are Dr. Tim & Darcy Kimmel.

Lives to Touch & a Difference to Make

Do you remember the day the rest of your life changed profoundly? The day when you first became a grandparent? the day when you first saw and held your first grandchild? I do. I remember when my son and daughter-in-law told me I was going to be a grandma - I was just 48, so I didn't really think I was quite old enough to be a grandma! But, I was extremely happy to hear a sweet little one would be arriving in a few months. I had absolutely no idea the difference he would make in my life. The first time I saw and held him, I knew beyond a doubt I would absolutely love him with my all. I have, and continue to do so - for him and his two brothers.

As long as I live, I am absolutely committed to make a difference in the lives of my precious grandchildren. There is nothing more important for me to do.

Take Your "Impossible Things" to God

As we have "arrived" at the middle of the week, I want to just take a moment to encourage you with this quote from Charles Spurgeon - "God alone can do what seems impossible."

First of all, this is true. God is far bigger than we think He is and He is able, and willing, to do far more than we will ever imagine. Nothing, absolutely nothing is impossible for God.

Christmas Gifts Which Make a Difference - Courageous Grandparenting

Over the past week or so I have shared with you 11 books/resources which have been written/designed by some of the Grandmas with Heart and two additional books written by grandmas we know - all of which make excellent and essential "tools" to equip you and help you hand down the faith. They are also make wonderful Christmas gifts for the parents, grandparents, children, friends and church leaders on your gift list.

Today and for the following two days I have books to share which are written by grandpas (while we grandmas have much of value to offer when it comes to handing down the faith, so do grandpas!) Today I am so happy to let you know about an excellent book, Courageous Grandparenting, for you and those on your gift list written by Cavin Harper the founder of the Christian Grandparenting Network.

Know What Matters the Most

I love this quote from Cavin Harper; founder of the Christian Grandparenting Network. This is absolutely the choice we as parents and grandparents need to understand and make. We need to hand down the faith intentionally, so the generations who follow us will know, love and serve Christ with their all.

Is there anything more important? Is there anything we could possibly want more? When we look at our life and the choices before us - especially the choices regarding what we do with the time we have - we need to absolutely see our time through the glasses of "what matters the most" and then be resolute in choosing to spend our time on "what matters the most".

Enjoy God's Gift of Your Unique Grandchildren

I came across this quote a few months back and thought when it snowed, I'd share it with you all. So, since it is snowing out my window this morning and we have a few inches on the ground, I'm happy to share it with you.

Each of our grandchildren are wonderful, precious gifts from the hand of God! Not only did He gift us with each grandchild, but He made each of them unique and special in their own way. Our grandchildren may all look alike, or you may have one with brown hair, one with red hair and one who has blond hair (as do I).

Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Grandparents & Parents, Too! Free Kindle Copy November 25-29, 2019

Two weeks from now you will be able to download your free Kindle copy of Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Grandparents & Parents, Too! This book will guide you through 52 weeks of praying through the Psalms for your own walk with God and for the ones you love as well. It is an excellent tool for you to use to help you in your walk and makes a great Christmas gift for the parents and grandparents you know.

Know the Children You Love

One of our Grandmas with Heart is Linda Ranson Jacobs; she is also the founder of DC4K (Divorce Care 4 Kids) and the author of, "The Single Parent Confident & Successful" as well as a wonderful source of practical and most importantly, wise information about raising children and handing down the faith.

Linda asks an essential question for us to keep in mind: "Do you know your child as God knows you?" Stop and think about this question for a moment. The Bible teaches God knew us before we were even born. It tells how God formed us and knows the number of our days, the thoughts we think - even before we do, the number of hair on our heads, and every word we say. He also knows His best plans for our lives. All of this is true for the children we love as well.
