Know the Children You Love

One of our Grandmas with Heart is Linda Ranson Jacobs; she is also the founder of DC4K (Divorce Care 4 Kids) and the author of, "The Single Parent Confident & Successful" as well as a wonderful source of practical and most importantly, wise information about raising children and handing down the faith.

Linda asks an essential question for us to keep in mind: "Do you know your child as God knows you?" Stop and think about this question for a moment. The Bible teaches God knew us before we were even born. It tells how God formed us and knows the number of our days, the thoughts we think - even before we do, the number of hair on our heads, and every word we say. He also knows His best plans for our lives. All of this is true for the children we love as well.

Yes, I'm sure we are all in agreement about how very well God knows us and the ones we love. So the question is not, how well does God know the ones we love, but the question is, how well do we know the children in our lives? Do we know what they love . . . and what they find annoying? Do we know their favorite food, color, music, book, activity, etc? Do we know how they feel about God, the Bible, praying, church, etc? Do we know what brings them joy? Do we know what they are truly struggling over? Do we know where they are in their own walks with God? How well do we know our grandchildren and children?

This is a very important question, because we need to know them if we are serious about handing down the faith. For us to know our grandchildren/children, really know them, we need to spend time with them - in person if we are blessed to live close and through tech if we live far. We have to make the effort, and not give up, when it comes to how well we know our children and grandchildren. We have to show them we love them and care about them. We have to have important conversations with them. And we have to model how we trust our God and we believe Him when He says He truly knows us - and them.

It matters for us to know the people God has entrusted into our care and to whom we are given the job and the great joy of handing down the faith. How well do you know them?
