But, we may not know as grandparents we are also responsible to hand down the faith. Now, unless our grandchildren live with us, our role is different as grandparent than it was as parent. But our responsibility is to be part of the people who hand faith to our grandchildren. In Deuteronomy 6 we read where God says He wants us to hand faith to our children and to our children's children - these are our grandchildren. We are not finished. We do not get to, "put our feet up" and "retire". No! We need to be people who are committed to be intentional and engaged when it comes to handing down the faith to our children's children.
Yes, this is a "job", given to us by God, but it is also our great joy as well. I know when my grandsons "get it" and are able to communicate about the things they are learning and understanding about God, there is no greater joy! I feel like John when he wrote in 3 John 1:4 -
I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in the truth. If John (who didn't have any children or grandchildren of his own) could rejoice over his "children" walking in the truth and share his joy with others, we certainly are able to do so as well! So, be intentional grandparents who enjoy their God-given "job" and continue to hand down the faith - it is absolutely a God-given privilege!
