Be Known for Kindness

Last week I wrote about giving the best gifts by giving the gift of Kindness (you will find it at this link.) I said; "When we speak softly with love, we are showing what it sounds like to be kind. When we give an encouraging hug or pat on the back, we are showing what it feels like to be kind. When we share with them - and take them with us to share with others - we are showing them what it looks like to be kind.

Most importantly, when we forgive them, we are showing them the heart of kindness. Jesus showed His kindness to us by forgiving us and He wants us to be people who forgive as well.Today I want to think a little more about showing kindness and why it matters.

We only have to listen to the evening news for a minute or two to see how kindness is sadly missing from our world today. Whether it is the lack of civility shown by our elected officials, the lack of concern for people fleeing wars, gangs, lack of food, looking for a safe place to raise the children they love, or something so horrible as human trafficking which plagues our entire world, it is obvious there is a deep, heart-breaking lack of kindness in our world, our country and even in our own communities.

While there are things we are able to do to address this need for kindness in our communities, country and world, this post is not about these things other than to say, when we are people who care about showing kindness, this kindness must reach beyond our own families and must impact the world around us. Look for ministries which show kindness to others in need in your community, country and world and do what you are able to do to make a difference. Model this for the ones you love, so they will learn to do the same.

Today I am writing about making kindness a cornerstone in your family. As I wrote last week; "When we speak softly with love, we are showing what it sounds like to be kind. When we give an encouraging hug or pat on the back, we are showing what it feels like to be kind. When we share with them - and take them with us to share with others - we are showing them what it looks like to be kind.

Most importantly, when we forgive them, we are showing them the heart of kindness. Jesus showed His kindness to us by forgiving us and He wants us to be people who forgive as well." These things are true. And, when we show what kindness sounds like, feels like and looks like, we open the door to showing where kindness comes from - Jesus models it for us.

When we are people who show kindness, we are doing something powerful; something which is able to make a difference and grow beyond our own families as the ones we love learn to show these same things to those around them. Like the line from the old song; "It only takes a spark to get a fire going." When we show the spark of kindness, it will get "going" and spread to our families, communities, country and world.

So, be like Jesus - be a grandma (or grandpa/parent) who is known for your kindness and pass it on, so the children you love are known for being kind as well.
