Teach - Do Not Forget

If you wonder what it is God wants you to do as a grandma (or grandpa - and parents, too), just take a look at this verse from Deuteronomy 4; God tells us to . . .
  • Be careful
  • Watch ourselves carefully
  • Do not forget what God has done
  • Do not let what God has done, "fade from our heart"
  • Teach our children
  • Teach our children's children
Six clear directions from God, to us in just one verse. We do not have to wonder if God has anything important for us to do as we grow older, we are able to know for sure He does and exactly what it is He wants us to do. So, let's take a closer look and see what it is we are supposed to be doing . . .
  • Be careful. What does this mean? Well, dictionary(dot)com defines "careful" as - "cautious in one's actions: taking pains in one's work; exact; thorough: solicitously mindful" This means if we are careful, we are mindful of our actions, take care in what we do, and are deliberate. Typically we are careful about the things which matter to us and what could possibly matter  more than handing the faith to our children and grandchildren? God wants us to be careful; to be mindful of what we are doing an deliberate in handing down the faith. We need to be careful.
  • Watch ourselves carefully. We already know what "careful" means, but not only are we to be careful in regards to the things we do, we are to watch ourselves carefully as well. We need to watch ourselves carefully and keep our focus upon the things which matter. We need to watch ourselves carefully to be sure we are handing down the faith. We need to watch ourselves carefully, so we are not distracted and sidetracked into spending our time on things which do not matter. We need to watch ourselves carefully.
  • Do not forget what God has done. We need to be careful, deliberate when it comes to remembering what God has done for us in the past and what He is continuing to do in our lives today as well. We need to remember and we need to tell, so the ones who come behind us will know and remember Who God is and what He has done. Do not forget what God has done.
  • Do not let what God has done, "fade from our heart". This is similar to the previous direction of do not forget, but it is different in how it challenges us to keep our focus upon what truly matters; the things which are most important. When we let things, "fade from our heart", we are busy focusing upon other things. While we may not have actually forgotten what God has done, those things may not matter as much to us as other things. Do not let what God has done, "fade from our heart" - keep them front and center.
  • Teach our children. This is clear - we need to teach them the truth about who God is, we need to teach them how they are able to believe the Bible with confidence, we need to teach them about the amazing things God has done in the past, the things He does today and why we are able to trust Him to be faithful in the future, we need to teach them how to be people who know, walk and talk with God on their own. We need to teach our children.
  • Teach our children's children - and teach them all the same things we taught our children.
This is handing down the faith and yes, it is what God wants us to do as grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too.)
