Be a Precious Gem to Your Family

Oh yes, we grandmas (and grandpas, too) are a precious, valuable gem; people of great value to our families . . . or at least we have the potential to be this for them. But, what does it look like for us to be this "precious gem"? Let's look at these verses for some insight . . .
Proverbs 3:2-4, 13-18 - Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.
Apparently if we are this "precious gem", we will have wisdom, understanding and because of this, we will be pleasant and our lives will show the blessing of living as a person who has peace. Think about it; if we live in a way which shows wisdom and understanding, why wouldn't we also be pleasant and peaceful people? And why wouldn't it be a blessing and a valuable part to any family to have wise, understanding, pleasant and peaceful people in their family!

There's more; look at these verses . . .
Colossians 4:2-6 - Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
While these verses are talking about showing grace to those who do not know Jesus, they apply to us and how we treat the family we have been blessed with by God. We need to be people who are devoted to prayer, watchful, thankful, wise in how we act to others and who uses words which show grace to everyone.

Let's look at one more passage . . .
Galatians 5:13b, 14, 22-26 - Serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
We are a "precious gem" to our family when we care about serving others humbly and with love and when we show the Fruit of the Spirit rather than thinking just about ourselves and the things we want.

So, what kind of grandma (grandpa) are you? What do you do to live in a way which makes you a "precious gem" to your family? I think it boils down to being wise, committed to prayer, loving our family with our all, showing grace and living by the Fruit of the Spirit; and when we live in this way, we will of course be a very "precious gem" to our families!
