Hand Down the Faith with Mystery Bags - Live a Life Which Builds Others Up

It certainly comes as no surprise, children enjoy participating in things which are fun. So, if we are able to "inject" a touch, or more, of fun into our efforts to hand down the faith, we are more likely to get our grandchildren to participate and, most importantly, they are more likely to remember, understand, and take to heart what we are teaching them. Fun is not a bad thing - in fact, it is a very effective tool when it comes to handing down the faith.

With this in mind, I thought I'd share with you a fun activity - another Mystery Bag activity which you may use with your grandchildren to engage them in learning about the power of their words. You will need . . .

  • Paper lunch bags - one per child
  • 2 cups of baking soda per child - measure in a zippy bag and put in Mystery Bag
  • 2 tablespoons salt - measure in a zippy bag and put in Mystery Bag
  • 1 teaspoon dish soap
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Bowls - one per child
  • Vinegar
  • Spoons and/or eye droppers
Arrange to connect through tech with your grandchildren/children and for them to receive the Mystery Bags which you either sent to them, or arranged with their parents to use the items they have in their home. Have the children open their bags and take out their zippys of baking soda and salt - have them mix them in their bowls and add the soap and water as needed until they have a "dough". Encourage them to make "snowmen" and set in their bowl.

Talk about the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23) and the things they may do to show they are choosing to live a life which shows these things. Take spoons or droppers and carefully fill with vinegar - let them pour it onto or squirt it into their "snowmen" and watch what happens. Talk about how the vinegar broke down, dissolved, destroyed their "snowman". Ask the children how unkind, harsh, unloving words break down, dissolve or destroy others. Talk about what they are able to do to build others up and show love to them.

Encourage your grandchildren/children to be people who show the Fruit of the Spirit in the way they live and treat others - and be certain to model this to them as well.
