They Learn by Watching

I was blessed to grow up living just down the street from my grandparents on my mom's side and next door to my grandparents on my dad's side when we were at our summer home. I remember many hours spent in their homes on visits and sleep-overs. I remember going to church with them. I remember seeing them read their Bibles and listening to them pray. I also remember how both sets of my grandparents dearly loved and were committed to each other. I was also blessed to see this love for one another in my parents.

My children grew up seeing this in their California grandparents (their dad's parents) when we lived there and when we moved to Michigan they were able to see it in their Michigan grandparents (my parents). They also saw it (and continue to see it) in their dad and I as we dearly love one another.

I know how important it was for me to see this example of genuine love in my grandparents and parents. I know it is important for my now grown children to have been blessed to experience it - and continue to experience it in their dad and I and in their "Michigan" grandparents. I am thankful my grandsons are now able to experience this genuine love modeled to them by their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

Never underestimate the power of positive role-modeling. The old saying of how children catch more than they are taught is true. Our grandchildren will be powerfully influenced by the things they see us - and the other role-models in their lives - do and by the things we say. When we genuinely love, they will know it, because they learn by watching.
