"There is no greater gift we can give to our grandchildren and no stronger weapon we can wield on their behalf, than our prayers. When we pray, eternity-impacting power is unleashed upon their lives."
Oh yes, as grandmas (and grandpas/parents, too) we pray for the children we love, but knowing doing so unleashes "eternity-impacting power" upon their lives reminds me how important it is for me to pray every day, throughout the day and whenever I wake up in the wee hours of the morning.
This "eternity-impacting power" is not based upon me - it is based upon God's faithful promise to hear, listen to and answer my prayers (Jeremiah 29:11). While there are things I am able to do to help and hand down the faith to my grandchildren, there are so many things I am not able to do. But, God is not limited by anything. He is not only able to do far more than we are ever even able to imagine, He is willing to do these things.
And, along with praying for our grandchildren, it is vital for us to help them learn to be people who talk with God on their own. Just as they must have a faith of their own and walk with God of their own, they must learn to talk with God for themselves. This is essential. Consider some of the following ways we are able to help our grandchildren learn to talk with God . . .
- When we have shared meals, rather than have just one person pray, involve each person in sharing something for which they are thankful.
- Pray Scripture blessings for them and invite them to join you in praying those blessings.
- Teach them to pray the Scriptures - the Psalms is a great place to begin. If you have not already gotten the book Praying Deeper Through the Psalms for Children for the children you love, please do. You are able to get the print version on Amazon at this link, but the digital download is just $5 in our bookstore (at this link) and you will be able to share it with all your grandchildren ages four through fourteen. Children's Day is the second Sunday in June and this book would make a tremendous gift for the children you love!
