Hold Tightly to the Promise & Live It

Proverbs 22:6 is a verse we all know and to which we hold tightly. We want to know the time we spend training and teaching our children will bring about the results we want. We want to know if we train and teach the children we love to know, love, and walk with God, they will continue to do so all of their lives.

This verse is a promise - easy for us to hold to when the children we love do grow to love, know, and walk with God; it may leave us with questions and uncertainties when the children we love turn away from the faith they knew as a child.

But, regardless, it is a promise; look at it in a few translations with which you may not be as familiar . . .
  • Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. (New Living Translation)
  • Start a youth out on his way; even when he grows old he will not depart from it. (Christian Standard)
  • Teach your children right from wrong, and when they are grown they will still do right. (Contemporary English Version)
  • Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life. (Good News Translation)
I really like the New Living Translation - direct the ones we love onto the right path. It does not say they will "never" leave the path, but it does say when they are older, they will not leave it. This verse is encouraging to those of us who have grown children/ grandchildren who are walking with God - and those who do not.

But, I do love the additional part Charles Spurgeon added . . . "be sure you go this way, too". We must "teach", "direct", "start" our children and grandchildren by the things we do - not just by the things we say. It matters so much what we do; we must be people who live, following the right way, if we want them to do so. If we tell them to do something, but do not show what it looks like to live in such a way, they are likely to turn away.

So, hold tightly to this promise and live it yourself.
