Weekly Devotion from Linda Ranson Jacobs!

I am very happy to share with you today an excellent resource to help you parent or grandparent with confidence - and wisdom. Linda Ranson Jacobs, the founder of Divorce Care and Divorce Care for Kids (DC4K) wrote a wonderful book - the single parent: confident and successful (which is excellent whether you are single or not.) On her facebook page, (which you will find at this link) Linda posts a new devotion every week. These devotions will encourage, challenge, and equip you to parent/grandparent, and hand down the faith. Check them out and please share the link with the people you know!

Use Affirming Words & Light Up the Lives of the Ones You Love

I love this quote from Gary Smalley! As we interact with our grandchildren, let us always keep in mind the power of our words - they are able to build up, or tear down. They are able to encourage, or discourage. They are able to communicate love, or show a lack of love. They are able to show great value, or a lack of value.

Take Heart - God ALWAYS Keeps His Promises

I find these verses so encouraging - God says we do not have to be afraid, because He promises to pour out His Spirit on our offspring and to bless our descendants. There is nothing I want more than to see my grown children and grandchildren make the choice to believe in Jesus and then to love, know and walk with Him. Nothing more important. This goes for family members and friends I love as well.

Hand the Faith to Your Grandchildren - They Are Able to Believe

As grandmas (and grandpas and parents, too) who are purposeful when it comes to handing down the faith, this truth is one which motivates and moves us. Our grandchildren are able to understand the truth about God, His love, grace, faithfulness and Word.

Make Time Today to Seek & Call Upon God

As you go through this day, take this verse from Isaiah to heart - spend time seeking and calling upon God, because we know He is near and will be found if we do these things.

Experience - Your Experience as a Grandparent Matters

When we were the parents, we were able to set rules - such as, our family goes to church. This is because we were the parents. But, when we become the grandparents, things change. We are no longer able to tell our grown children what we do as a family. We are not able to tell our grandchildren what they will do (other than when they are at our home). Our relationship with our grown children and grandchildren changes when they become the parents and we become the grandparents.

Why We Tell the "Whys"

I had a conversation yesterday with a friend who has grown children who are no longer walking with God. Her heart is broken. More and more often I have these conversations as more and more often people tell me about their lived grown children who are turning away from their faith. These friends never thought their sons/daughters would turn away from their faith. When they were little, they took them to church, modeled faith in the home, taught, and handed down the faith. These friends did everything they knew to do as parents to hand down the faith, but today, their grown children are turning away from the faith and are they are alone in handing faith to their grandchildren.

Teach the Whys & Help Your Grandchildren Develop a Confident Faith

Okay, I know I have been posting a fair amount about my new book - Blue Dragons, Red Pandas, Hoopoes & More! Please bear with me today as I share a bit more about it - and a way for you to save money on the book or even get a digital copy for free!

As I wrote in my other post today - it absolutely is essential for us to tell the ones we love the "whys" - why we are able to believe God is real and trust the Bible with confidence. If we do not, we run the terrible risk of the day coming when they turn away from their faith. This is happening more and more to families across our country - maybe even to your family. If we do not equip the ones we love with solid reasons for why they are able to believe, when difficulties come there way they may turn from their faith. But, when we equip them with the "whys", we are helping them develop a confident faith.

Steadfast Love, Never-ending Mercy, Great Faithfulness

I wrote yesterday about having a "morning song" and shared what is my "morning song" - Lamentations 3:22, 23 (you will find it at this link.)  I love these verses - not only do they encourage me with the truth of how God's love and mercy for me are steadfast, unending, new each day, and bigger than I am able to imagine, but they fill me with hope knowing these things are true also for the ones I love. God's love and mercy for them will not end!

"A Great & Powerful Tool" to Help You Hand Down a Confident Faith

As you know, I recently released a new book designed to help your grandchildren (and you) develop a strong, confident faith in this world where a growing number of young people are leaving their faith and becoming atheists and agnostics. When we look at creation, we see God's design - design means there has to be a Designer.

Blue Dragons, Red Pandas, Hoopoes & More! is more than just an animal picture book - it is a tool which will help you hand down a confident faith! As Cavin Harper, from the Christian Grandparenting Network said; "I LOVE this little book you have created. What a great and powerful tool for shaping young minds to see and acknowledge the truth about God's creation. Well done. Every parent and grandparent ought to have this tool in their toolkit to teach the truth about creation and evolution. This is a marvelous tool I want to let every grandparent know about. Thank you for taking time with your grandsons to create this extraordinary piece."

Grandparents & Parents Absolutely Are Relevant & Make a Difference

God's plan for children is for them to grow up being influenced and taught by the generations who came before them - by their parents and grandparents. While a focused Children's Ministry and Youth Ministry are able to help in the handing down of the faith, the primary responsibility - and the ones who are able to make the biggest impact - lies with the parents and grandparents.

Make Sure They Know - Pray & Let God Worry

Life, as we all currently know and experience it, seems to have so many things about which we - and the ones we love - worry. Will our grandchildren return to their school classes? If so, will they be safe? Will someone we love end up with Covid-19? Will we get Covid-19? Will the social unrest related to injustice and racism bring about needed and lasting changes? What will happen with the election? How will the country respond regardless of who wins? Oh there are certainly no shortage of things about which we worry.

A Prayer from Psalm 102 for Our Families

As I watched the news this morning I was reminded of how there is so much anger, unhappiness, pain and even hate, yes even hate, in our world today. My heart breaks for the environment in which my grandsons are growing up. There is so much chaos, so much anger, such a lack of peace, joy and love.

I was reminded once again, why it matters so much for me to be faithful about handing down the faith on purpose. The world in which my grandsons are growing up lacks peace, love and joy, but these things are available in abundance from God! We were never intended to find them in the world - they are gifts from God.

So, as I pray for my grandsons today, Psalms 102:12 & 18 is what I'm praying for them, and for me as well . . .

Make Sure Your Grandchildren Know About Prayer

Part of what we do when we hand down the faith is focus upon giving our grandchildren a true view of prayer. Some children find it easy to talk with God, while others are confused when it comes to talking with Someone they are not able to see. But, if they are able to learn to talk with - and in so doing, connect with - God, the impact upon their lives is powerful.

Consider some of the following ideas for helping your grandchildren connect with God by learning to talk with Him -

Build an Unshakable Foundation

One thing Covid-19 has showed us is we are do not able to depend upon the church to hand faith to our grandchildren. Not only are we not able to do this due to covid, but it is something we must not do - covid or not. Handing faith to our grandchildren is the "job", and great joy, of the parents and grandparents; not the church.

Prayer for Parents as They Make Decisions

Image may contain: one or more people, text that says 'Prayer for Parents as They Make Decisions About the Upcoming School Year'Father God,
Our adult children and their spouses are navigating uncharted waters. They are currently struggling with whether to send our grandchildren back into the classroom or keep them at home for online school. This is a difficult dilemma, especially as the numbers of COVID-19 cases continue to increase.

Hand Down the Faith with a Sticky-Note Bible Tool!

When you have grandchildren who are old enough to begin reading the Bible on their own, consider giving them some of those narrow strip sticky notes to use them to mark when they read a verse which they do not understand. Then, when they are at your house, they will be able to ask you what the verse is talking about.

Creation Shows God's Design & Gives Us a Confident Faith

My grandsons love animals. They have so far throughout their lives. So, when I wanted to come up with a way to help them learn to see and remember the truth about how God is real, it made sense to me to look at His creation. After all, Romans 1:20 tells us - "God's eternal power and character cannot be seen. But from the beginning of creation, God has shown what these are like by all he has made. That's why those people don't have any excuse."

Encourage Them with "You Make My Heart Happy"

I have another blog, grandma's cookie jar. One of the things I do on it is review items grandmas/parents may be interested in - such as a lot of books. One  publisher invited me to review a book for children, Pinky Got Out!

My grandsons were at my house when the book arrived - my youngest grandson saw it, and asked his poppa to read it to him. After they did this, I asked my grandson if he liked the book. He said; "It is the best thing ever . . . except for you, grandma. Nothing is better than you, grandma!" My heart was so happy!

He is Not Finished With You

Do you ever wonder if the things you say and do make a difference when it comes to your grown children and grandchildren? Do you ever question the value of the things you have to offer to them? Do you feel like you may be from an "old" time and the things you know just do not "fit" with today?

If so, please take this quote from Beth Moore to heart - "If you are still alive, then God is NOT finished with you!"

Do Something Which Lasts

As grandmas (and grandpas) who are focused and intentional when it comes to handing down the faith, there may be times when we wonder if what we are trying to do is actually being accepted by our grandchildren; or not. We may wonder if we are effective when it comes to handing down the faith; or not. We may wonder if our grandchildren are really being impacted for Jesus by the things we say and do; or not.

For A Time We Cannot See

I remember the first time I looked into the eyes of each of my grandsons - I knew I would love them forever and I knew I wanted to be certain to hand down the faith to each of them.

Tell Why We are Able to Believe The Lord Has Done This

When I look at the world around me, I see God's "fingerprints" on everything. Design, purpose, intention, and order tell me there has to be a Designer. While these things may be obvious to you and to me, they are not so obvious to everyone and according to George Barna's research, he says; "The percentage of Gen Z who identifies as atheist is double that of the U.S. adult population." Gen Z are those people born between 1999 and 2015 - and the numbers of people choosing to deny the existence of God continues to climb.

Close to the Heart of God

Children are a gift from the hand of God - He puts them in our lives for a reason - for us to hand faith to them and for them to bring joy to our lives. So, the things we do to invest in the lives of the children we love and know, are the things which matter the most.

God is Always Faithful to Be There for You & the Ones You Love

I don't know about you, but I find great encouragement in this verse. I want to be an effective and intentional grandma who is focused upon handing down the faith; and I know there certainly are times when I am. But I am far from perfect; very far. There are times when I am not as focused upon handing down the faith as I would like. Times when I know I could do a better job when it comes to handing down the faith.

I am ever so thankful God is faithful to do as He has promised to do; draw the ones I love to Him. He never fails. He always is working - even when I am not able to see what He is doing.

Pray and Let God Worry

Two years ago as I (Lynda) worked on my book, The DNA of Grandparents & Parents Who Hand Down the FaithI did some research on Martin and Katherine Luther. I found a quote which really stood out for me - Martin said; "Pray and let God worry."

A few hours later I had to move beyond thinking, "What a wonderful quote", to do it - pray and make the choice to not fear and worry, but to give the fear and worry to God. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law live in Northern California (the true North, just two hours from Oregon at the top of the valley along the Eastern side of the Trinity Alps). It is one of the most beautiful places on the face of the earth - clearly shows God's handiwork - and it was on fire.

Now Available as Autographed Printed Copies in our Bookstore!

For some time now a number of books have been available in Digital format in our Bookstore - now they are also available as autographed print books as well - at a cost less than Amazon. These books are tools to help you hand down the faith and make excellent gifts as well.

Leave a Legacy of Faith

You may be a grandma (or grandpa/parent) who knows how to hand down the faith and who is intentional about doing so. You may be a a grandma (or grandpa/parent) who struggles who knowing what to do and how to consistently implement leaving this "legacy of faith", or you may have just learned how this is your job and joy and are wondering how and where to start doing so. Regardless of where you are with handing down the faith, this is something we all need to put as a top priority as it not only impacts you life, but the lives of your grown children, grandchildren, and generations yet unborn.

God 's Existence is Evident

Today so many people - sometimes even people we love with all our heart - question the existence of God. More and more in school the children we love are taught God is not real and everything around them just "happened".

But, when I look at the world around me I see order, purpose, design, precision . . . these things are not possible if everything came from chaos and just happened. The world is filled with precision and design is so evident. It is there for us to see - and we do not even have to look very hard to see it.

Blue Dragons, Red Pandas, Hoopoes & More is Available & I'm Giving One Digital Copy Away!

I am so happy today to announce the release of the new book - Blue Dragons, Red Pandas, Hoopoes & More - in our Bookstore and on Amazon. This book is a unique book which children will love - it is filled with photos of unique animals along with fun facts about each of these animals. In addition there are activities - crafts, recipes, games, and science projects following each animal to help children remember the fun and important things they learned.

Most importantly, and the reason for this book, is how it is designed to help grandparents and parents equip the children they love so they are able to see, recognize, and believe the truth about how God designed and created the world upon which we live and everything in it. You will find quotes from scientists which reinforce how science clearly shows everything on this world was designed to be as they are. This means there has to be a Designer and gives us so many reasons to believe God is real!

Look what people are saying about Blue Dragons, Red Pandas, Hoopoes & More . . .

Fun Facts about Grandparents & Why What We Do Matters!

I sincerely believe we grandparents need to focus on handing down a heritage of faith to our grandchildren. I believe with all my heart it matters for us to be intentional when it comes to handing down our faith to these grandchildren given to us by God. There are reasons I believe this - some of them are . . .

Be a Praying "Babushka" for Your Grandchildren

I recently read in my Grandmother's Bible a devotion by Joni Eareckson Tada. In it she said, "When Ken and I were in Russia . . . we met many Russian 'babushkas'. The praying grandmothers . . . the stalwart saints of whom Stalin had cruelly said, 'If we can get rid of these old women, we will have the youth in our grasp.' Stalin failed. And thank God for praying grandmothers who served as a link, spanning a generation lost to atheism and connecting a new generation of young people who are asking open, honest questions about Jesus."  Then the prayer for the day, "Father of all ages, as gray hairs abound, may righteousness abound. May I never resent the encroaching years, but view them as an opportunity to deepen my life of praise and intercession."

Prayer for Our Grandchildren to Believe

Lord Jesus,
The greatest legacy we can leave to grandchildren is the legacy of our prayers for their salvation. They are the apple of our eye, without a doubt. However, like us, they sin and “fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). They need to be washed in Your blood.

Tell the "Whys" - Science Shows a Cause, a Designer & Intelligence

When I was young, since I was a Christian, it made sense to me to believe God is real and the Bible is true. It was a "given" I would believe. So, when I became a parent, I focused upon helping my children learn what the Bible says, Who God is, and took them to a solid church where they would be involved in serving. It never occurred to me to teach them "why" we believe God is real and they are able to trust the Bible with confidence.

Help the Ones You Love See the Design & Believe in the Designer

As a grandma who believe the Bible, when it tells me God created the world upon which I live and everything on it, I believe. There are reasons I believe . . . first of all, I believe the Bible to be true. Secondly, when I look at the world, and everything on it, I see design, purpose, intention - for it all to have happened from chaos or chance seems impossible to me. I believe, and I want the ones I love to believe as well.

Our Faith is Strengthened by the Winds of Adversity & the Sunshine of Blessing

The past four months have been very unexpected; the future months through the end of 2020 and start of 2021 are uncertain, but we are still able to have faith which is rooted in Christ alone, watered by the Spirit and the Word.

Be a Torchbearer

The world in which our grandchildren are growing up is far different than it was when we were children, teens and even young adults. But, while the world is different, God and His Word are unchanging. The light of the Gospel is the one thing which changes the darkness of the world in which we live. Be torchbearers! Hold forth the truth of how Jesus is the Light, God's Word gives light and definitely treat our grandchildren with grace, patience, and love, so they are drawn to Jesus.

An Inconvenient Truth

Okay, I'm about to share a truth with you which you may not want to think about. Ready??? Here it is . . . you are not getting any younger. No matter how much you want to think the image in the mirror is not looking older, the truth is, you are not getting any younger - neither am I.

And, neither are our grandchildren.

Why do I mention this, you ask? For one reason, because it is the truth. If we do not understand and accept the truth, we will not be able to act upon it. And this is an important truth we must act upon.

Our Job & Our Joy

Five years ago I was invited to join a small group of people to see what we could do help churches engage, equip, and encourage grandparents to hand down a heritage of faith to their grandchildren. This group eventually became the Legacy Coalition - Grandparenting Matters!

God Delights in His Creation

In one of the devotions in the Grandmother's Bible from Zondervan, Jan Silvious focused on Psalm 139:1-12. She said, "It's true it's all about God, but in the long run, He is all about you. He created you, gave breath to your lungs and sustains your life . . . His love for you is without bounds. His interest in you is intense. . . He created you with purpose and ability . . . He is God. He created you and He absolutely adores His creation. Pass this good news on to your grandchildren. They know you love them, but the greater news is God, Who created them, loves them without limit."

Experience Joy

How often have you heard grandparents and parents say, when talking about the children they love, the most important thing to them is for their grandchild or child to be happy? Our world chases after happiness. We think more, bigger, better, newer, cooler will all equate to happiness. But it does not. Oh, yes, people may be “happy” for a few moments, until what they have is no longer more, bigger, better, newer or cooler.
Happiness depends on situations, and as we know, situations change – all too fast. What people are really looking for is joy; and it is not found in things. So, where do we find joy? God’s Word tells us – look at Psalm 100 . . .

The "Treasure Receiver"

The past several years, I have had the great joy to be a "treasure receiver". My three sweet grandsons have been quick to give me "treasures" . . . old, dead, dry sycamore leaves (because they are so big and cool!!!!), little green leaves ("These are leaves, grandma!!!!!") flowers (which are actually weeds) by the hands-full, not to mention smiles, "twinkling" eyes, hugs, kisses, snuggles, stories and jokes . . . treasures all!

My grandsons have been convinced I love these treasures, because I always smile, tell them, "thank you" and give them hugs in return. While I may not "love" old, dead, dry leaves or weeds by the hands-full, I absolutely love my grandsons with all my heart, so if something is "treasured" by them, I'm so happy and thankful to be the person with whom they share these "treasures".

Pray They Will Seek God & Follow Him

As grandmas (and grandpas/parents, too) there are many things we need to do, but one essential thing is we need to talk with God and ask Him to make His ways known to our grandchildren – and family! If we want them to remember God’s compassion and faithful love, how they have been able to see these things in their own lives in the past, and have open eyes to see it today . . . and in the future as well, we need to pray they will continue to choose to follow God’s way, all of their lives, and will choose to seek Him, follow the path He puts before them, and have hearts filled with worship to Him!

Plant Those Seeds

Your grandchildren watch you. They watch how you interact with their poppa (or grandma). They watch how you interact with their parents. They watch how you interact with your friends. They watch how you interact with them. They watch - and they learn.

Help Them Blossom

One of the most powerful ways we show love to our grandchildren is by the words we use. Words have power. We all know this to be true from our own experiences and because the Bible tells us this as well . . .

"Time is the Brush of God"

One thing we grandmas (and grandpas, too) are uniquely able to offer our grandchildren is the vision of "time". We have lived a "few" years; we have "time" behind us which gives us a bigger view of life and helps us see with a clearer view the things God is doing, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of the ones we love and in the world around us.

Family = a Gift from God

Family. What is a family? The On-Line Dictionary defines family as . . . "a. A fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children.   b. Two or more people who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one another, and reside usually in the same dwelling place."

Talk to the One Who Moves the Mountains

Today, whether the ones you love are walking with God or not, take time to talk to God on their behalf. Share with Him the things for which you are thankful, as well as your concerns.

And if you have "mountain-sized concerns", remember what Max Lucado said -

God's Word is the Key

As Christian grandparents and parents we may look at the world around us and wonder how we are ever going to be able to hand down a heritage of faith when so many things which appeal to the children we love push them away from God. But, we do not have to be discouraged. We truly are able to be successful when it comes to handing down our faith. The “key” for helping the children we love grow to walk faithfully with God is found in God’s Word. Look at what we know to be true about God’s Word . . .
