Larry Fowler, the founder of Legacy Coalition, wrote about how the average child only attends church, at best, every other week; which means they are only receiving about 20 hours a year of Children's Ministry programming. Yes, I said 20 hour a year! Even the children who are there every week, still only receive about 80 hours a year. I'm sure you agree it is insufficient in either case.
Children's Ministry leaders are not able to be with the children in their ministries all the time - this is why God gave the primary responsibility for reaching and discipling children to their parents and grandparents. Yes, as grandmas it is our God-given job - and joy - to hand down the faith to our grandchildren.
With this in mind, today I want to write about something important. Something on which we grandmas must focus. Something we need to make a central part of our plan to reach and disciple our grandchildren - be certain they know they are loved by us and even more by God.
At the meeting I was blessed to be part of, Steve Bell (Willow Creek Church) said something which got my attention: "How we feel about our grandchildren is how they will feel about themselves."
Did this get your attention? It sure got my attention! Happily, my grandsons know I love them like crazy and absolutely believe they are gifts from the hand of God! Why do they know this? Because I've said this to them a time or two . . . or pretty much every time I see them!
Steven Curtis Chapman wrote a song a few years ago called, Meant to Be. I won’t put all of the lyrics here – take a moment to look them up on-line – but I will share a few lines . . .
“Long before you drew your first breath, a dream was coming true. God wanted to give a gift to the world, so He wrapped it up in you! Every step that you’ve taken, every move that you make, is part of His plan! You were meant to be touching the lives that you touch. And meant to be here making this world so much more than it would be without you in it . . . You are perfectly, wonderfully, beautifully meant to be!”I love this song because along with telling my grandchildren how much they are loved by me, it reminds me to tell them the most important message of how much God loves them and He has a great plan for their lives! They are perfectly, wonderfully, beautifully meant to be and it is a message I absolutely give my grandsons!
Please know we grandmas do make a huge impact upon our grandchildren. It does matter what we say and do around these sweet blessings from God - more than you may even know!
