The Real Big Things

When it comes to my grandsons, there are things which may at first look seem small, but the truth is, they are actually the real big things. For example, my grandsons love to tell me about all kinds of tech things. I am almost as "non-tech" as a person could possibly be, but, my grandsons are all quite techy. It would be easy to "zone out" and not pay attention as they tell me about tech things, but these things are important to them. So, when they tell me about tech things - or anything - I stop what I am doing, look them in the eyes and listen. I try to ask questions which show I am listening. I want them to know - and experience - how when something was important to them, it was important to me - or at least important enough for me to truly listen to them. My grandsons - and the things about which they care - are the Big Things.

Throughout their lives I want them to know if something matters to them, it matters to me and they are able to be certain I will listen to them.

These days it is easy, far too easy, for us to be focused upon our own tech - phones, computers, etc. and not pay attention to the things which are the real big things. We must never allow tech to come between us and our grandchildren. When my oldest grandson was three, he came up to me one day and said; "A grandma's lap is a place for grandsons!" I was working on a post, but I closed my computer, smiled at him, put it away, and he happily climbed into my lap - of course I was very happy for this impromptu snuggle time!

Always remember what matters. Be certain you are watching for what is most important. Do not miss the real big things. Put your grandchildren first - and be sure they know and remember how you did.
