A "Real" Prayer with Concerns & Cares & We Hold On to God - Psalms 102

Don't you just love reading the prayers of David in the Book of Psalms? David was very "real" in the way he talked with God. He didn't "sugar-coat" his prayers or try to sound "holy". He just talked with God about the cares on his heart. And, apparently, like me, some of the "cares" on his heart had to do with his children, their descendants, and even children, "not yet created" - his grandchildren!

We may think we are not really able to share what is on our heart when we pray; the concerns, cares, and even things about which we may feel confused and upset. But David did and we do not read of any lightening bolts being sent from God to "zap" David for being "real".

Look at Psalms 102 for an example of a "real" prayer . . .

  • David talked with God about how he felt like God was not listening to him.
  • He felt like he was getting old - his days, "vanish like smoke".
  • He talked about how others "taunted him".
Then David said these things were God's fault, because He has, "thrown me aside".  Whoa! No "sugar-coating" there.

Then David goes on to talk about God's greatness, compassion, and how, "His descendants will be established before" God. Clearly David was comfortable with sharing what was on his heart, but in so doing, he didn't end up turning away from God; David continued to hold on to God.

If you are experiencing feelings like David, if you feel like God is not listening to you, you are just getting older, and God has "thrown you aside", take heart! Pray like David did; share your concern for your children and grandchildren and hold on to God. Today, and all though the year, consider making Psalm 102 your prayer.
Dear God, please hear my prayer; let my cry for help come before You. Do not hide your face  from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly. I praise You for Your greatness which endures for all generations. Please help my children and grandchildren see and experience how Great You are. Please show them and me how You do respond to our prayers and do not turn away; let generations not even yet born see and experience this as well, so not even one of my children, grandchildren and generations to come will be lost. Please help us see how you remain the same, and your years will never end. Please help me live in Your presence and establish all my descendants before You. Thank You for Your great love for us; I love You, too - Amen.
