Be Prepared & Proactive

As Barna's studies show, and I have been sharing, our grandchildren's generation is turning away from their faith at double the rate of any previous generation. This matters - whether it describes any of the ones we love, or not. We must be prepared and proactive - and we need to ask our churches to be prepared and proactive as well.

Love, No Matter What

As I thought about what to write today, God brought to mind 1 Corinthians 13:4 . . . Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Foot-tracks of Grace

Don't you just find this quote from the Kimmels both encouraging and challenging? We absolutely leave foot-tracks for our children and grandchildren to follow by what we say, but our foot-tracks are much, much clearer when what we do backs up what we say. And, when what we say and do is grounded firmly in grace, our tracks will not only be "clear", but they will be "attractive".

Find the Footprints of Jesus

As we near what may be the end of the time many of us have spent staying home and away from family, friends, church, and school due to covid, remember this quote from Charles Stanley -

As you walk through the valley of the unknown, you will find the footprints of Jesus both in front of you and beside you.
God has promised to never leave us and He always keeps His promises. Just look at these verses . . .

"Life on the Goldilocks Planet" Series & Some Changes to the Series

A couple weeks ago I mentioned a change in my "Life on the Goldilocks Planet" series - today I am going to explain what this change is and why there is a change.

One thing we all care about as Christian grandmas (or grandpas/ parents) is for the children we love to be people who believe in, love, know, and walk with God. We want them to have a confident faith. Is there really anything which matters more than for our grown and grandchildren to be believers?

Think About & Invest in the Generations Who Come Behind

It is easy to think as we approach retirement, or actually become retired, our time is now for us. We may think it is finally time for us to travel, play golf, or just enjoy the years we have remaining however we choose, but this is a very short-sighted way to look at the last years we have on this Earth.

Encourage Your Grandchildren With - God Made One Version of You

Stop whatever you are doing right now and call your grandchildren . . . well, after you finish reading this post! When you finish, grab your phone and call your grandchildren, or send them an email or text, or just go visit if they live close enough and you are safely able to do so with covid. When you connect, share with them the truth of this quote from Max Lucado - God only made one version of them!

Leave Your "Grandprints" on Their Heart

It is our heart's desire to see grandparents stand up and commit to be intentional Christian grandparents who are focused upon handing down a heritage of confident faith to their grandchildren, and help churches become intentional when it comes to equipping their grandparents to be intentional. This is why this blog exists.

Use Humor to Make the Ride Smoother

Every day, but especially during difficult times, it may be helpful to find something to laugh about; something to make your ride smoother. This doesn't mean you are not facing those difficult times, but especially with children, it is helpful to find something which makes you laugh.

Don't Be Comfortable as Anyone Less Than You Were Created to Be

I love this quote from T. D. Jakes as it is true for us and for the ones we love. As you go through the day today, please tell yourself this truth - "God has invested entirely too much in you for you to be comfortable as anyone less than you were created to be."

It is Where Their Names Are

Behind my house, in my back yard is a maple tree. It is no ordinary maple tree. It is an enormous maple tree. It is behind our two-stall garage and extends far above and far to both sides. It is enormous - well, not compared to a Redwood tree . . . which is truly enormous - but compared to normal Michigan Maple trees, this one is enormous.

Be a "Difference-Maker"

Today is a gift from God to you. As I've said before, it is likely there are fewer days before us than there are behind us, so we need to be focused and purposeful about making the most of the days which God gifts to us.

Be Prepared - Be Proactive & Ready with Answers

Yesterday I shared a post which I asked you to share with the leaders in your children/Children's Ministry. In it I told about a friend whose grandson went to church with her almost every week, until he reached fifth grade and then he decided, "he wasn't into that church thing anymore."

While none of us want to have our grandchildren tell us this as they grow up, far too many of us have heard or will hear this. As Barna's studies show, Gen Z is turning away, not only from church, but from their faith as well. This absolutely is not something we are able to just sit back and wring our hands over or hope and pray it doesn't happen to the ones we love. If the ones we love never go down this road, we are certainly relieved, but we will absolutely know people - like my friend - for whom it does happen and this matters.

Be Part of the Answer

A few days ago I wrote the following post for my Children's Ministry blog (About the Children's Department). I want to share it with you and ask you to please share it with the leaders in your church.

Today I am going to share with you a true account about real people I know and how the church - Children's Ministry in particular - must step up to be part of the answer.

Use Kind & Gentle Words

The Bible tells us to use kind, gentle words as they will soothe angry feelings. In Colossians 4:6 it says -

Encourage Your Grandchildren With - You Make My Heart Happy!

Do you have any favorite sayings you speak often to your grandchildren? Something special you say to communicate your love and the truth of how your grandchildren hold great value? Something to encourage them?

Our Grandchildren Are the Only Ones Who Are Able to be Them

Of course we grandmas (and grandpas/parents) love the children with whom God has blessed us. We tell them we love them, often; which is something very important for us to do.

Joyfully Embrace the Unique Challenges & Opportunities

I remember when my grandsons were little - they loved to play "I'm under the table" (otherwise known as Hide and Seek.) They loved to make up silly stories - always with monsters and super heroes . . . no butterfly and rainbow stories with these boys!

And, there was lots of sitting in grandma's lap with hugs and snuggles!

Today; Fight the Good Fight For All You Are Worth

Today we have the opportunity to make a difference. Today we have the opportunity to pray for the ones we love. Today we have the opportunity to share how God has been faithful to show His great love to you. Today you have the opportunity to hand down confident faith. Today you are, "actually in the battle".

The Future Isn't That Far Away

It is easy for us to be focused upon the day before us and lose sight of this very important truth - "the future isn't that far away". It is actually upon us.

Handing Down a Heritage of Confident Faith is Essential & Can be Fun, too!

I've been writing for the past week and a half about handing down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren. As I said yesterday; "We so easily become distracted by the things in this world. We lose focus of what is truly most important and think things like earning more money, taking bigger and better vacations owning a bigger and newer home, driving new cars, etc. are important when in truth, none of these things matter. Not really. If we end up with all these things, but fail to hand down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren, will we say; 'Oh well. I had a great car, house and big bank account.'? No. Nothing, please allow me to repeat, NOTHING is more important than handing down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren. If we are serious about handing down a heritage of confident faith, we have to stay focused upon what is really important, so we do not become distracted by this world."

The Wisdom of Grandparents

Grandparents and wisdom; the two often go together. One of the ways Grandparents share their wisdom is through a favorite "sayings" they tend to use with their grandchildren. There is a reason old sayings, such as these, are handed down from one generation to the next - they tend to be wise sayings.

How Do We Hand Down a Heritage of Confident Faith? Serve God & Do Not be Distracted by the World!

I have been writing for the past few days about how we are part of God's plan to hand down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren; and we need to focus upon doing so. Today as I finish looking at Deuteronomy 6, I want to think about what it means when it tells us to -

How Do We Hand Down a Heritage of Confident Faith? Pay Attention & Remember Our Blessings are from God!

We have been looking at how we are part of God's plan to hand down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren, and we need to focus on doing so. Today I want to think about what it means when Deuteronomy 6 tells us to -

God's Love is Unfailing & His Peace Will Not Be Removed

Peace. It is what everyone wants, the thing for which many spend their lives searching, the thing which God offers us at all times, and the thing which especially at times like this, we are able to experience. Look what God tells us in Isaiah 54:10 -

Encourage Your Grandchildren With - Way to Go!

Encouraging our grandchildren is one part of our "job" as grandmas (and grandpas, too). Since the world around our grandchildren is very apt to leave them questioning their value, and we know God values them tremendously, I thought it might be nice to share some of my favorite encouraging words from the NIV Mom's Devotional Bible list of ways to praise children. Today I am happy to share with you -

How Do We Hand Down a Heritage of Confident Faith? God's Word on our Hearts

Choose to Enjoy Every Drop of Today

With COVID-19 many people have been afraid; many lives have been - and continue to be - disrupted with schools closed, places of work closed, and even with churches closed. But, while our day-to-day lives may have been changed over the past year, our attitude does not need to be one of worry or fear. We are able to model what it looks like to trust Jesus and, as Gary Chapman said; "choose to enjoy every drop of today!"

Yelling at Children (and Huskies) Carries With it a Very High Cost

My grandsons love dogs; Huskies in particular. They are looking forward to the day when they will be able to have a Husky of their own. Yesterday when my son came to pick up my grandsons from their sleepover, he shared how Nicolas Petit was leading in this year's Iditarod; and was expected to win. But then something unexpected happened. One of his dogs jumped onto a younger dog and Nicolas yelled at the older dog. All of the dogs in his team heard him yelling; something which he said just does not happen with him and his dogs. When he started yelling, all of the dogs refused to go a step farther in the race. Nicolas said the dogs refused to move anywhere, so they ended up having to call in snowmobiles to get them off the ice on the coast of the Bering Sea and he had to withdraw from the race. Yelling at his dogs cost him the race.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day

Make today a day of prayer!

How Do We Hand Down a Heritage of Confident Faith? Impress God's Word Upon Our Grandchildren!

I have been writing about how our "job" is not finished just because our children are grown. If we have grandchildren we still have a very important job to do. We are part of what Deuteronomy 6 is talking about. We are part of God's plan to hand down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren.

Grandma's Most Important Job

Whether you go by the "name" of grandma, nana, meme, me-mom, granny or even "Dave" (last year when I asked what your grandchildren call you, one of you said your grandson called you "Dave" for about a year when he was two - for no reason anyone was able to discover!), we grandmas are able to make a huge impact on the lives of our grandchildren. Yes, we encourage dreams, cheer our grandchildren's successes, show warmth, kindness, love and are quick to laugh. But the most important thing any grandma will ever do is to hand down confident faith and point our dear grandchildren to Jesus.

The "Messages" You Send.

Growing up oftentimes will be difficult. Trying to figure out "who" you are and what you are going to "do" with your life, are not the easiest things to do. Children sometimes receive messages which make this even more difficult. It is one of our greatest responsibilities to be absolutely certain the messages our grandchildren/ children receive from us are ones which build them up, encourage them and give them a positive view of themselves for many reasons, but one of the most important reasons is because the way a grandparent (and parent) sees a child is often the way they will see themselves.

How Do We Hand Down a Heritage of Confident Faith? We Must Be People of the Word!

As I have been saying, "If we have grandchildren, we still have a very important job. We are a big part of what Deuteronomy 6 is talking about. We are part of God's plan to hand down a heritage of confident faith to our grandchildren." Happily, Deuteronomy 6 tells us how we are able to do exactly this. It begins with . . .

Share Jesus with Your Young Grandchildren - A Whole Life is Able to Be Saved

Handing down confident faith is of course first all about helping our grandchildren learn about God, His love, grace and forgiveness, so they will come to make the decision to believe in Him. When our grandchildren make this decision as children, DL Moody is correct: a whole life is saved!

A Gift for You - A Prayer to Share

From time to time I share a printable Scripture blessing with you which you are able to download, print and hang on your wall to use as a blessing with the ones you love. You may hang it where you will see it in your home and use it with your family to help you be intentional when it comes to "blessing" the ones you love. Today I am very happy to share with you another Scripture prayer/blessing which you are also able to download, print and hang on your wall to use with the ones you love.

Set Your Clocks Ahead Tonight

Don't forget to set your clocks forward tonight!

We are Alive for a Reason - Don't Give Up

Don't you just love Psalm 139:16 -

In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

God knew, before we even lived one moment of one day, how many days He planned to "form for" us! Look at Jeremiah 29:11 -

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Our days are part of God's plan for us. Our days have purpose. Our days have meaning whether we are young, or not so young any more. As long as we are alive, there is a reason for us to be alive; and perhaps even many reasons. Consider the following . . .

We Cannot Love Too Much

We grandmas tend to get the false "rap" of being people who "spoil" grandchildren. I personally believe it is impossible to spoil grandchildren (and even wrote a book with this title), because as long as we are being faithful to hand down confident faith and to follow what Jesus told us to do in Matthew 22:36-40, we will never spoil our grandchildren. When we focus upon following God's example of well-loving us and we love as He has loved us, we know it is impossible to well-love our grandchildren too much.

So, how does God, "well-love" us? Well, consider the following . . .

We LOVE Being Grandparents

While we certainly love being a mom (or dad) to our own children, there is something special about being a grandma (or grandpa) to the children of our own loved children. Our children and grandchildren are most certainly gifts from the hand of God and are some of the most amazing blessings of our lives.

Commit to Teach the "Whys"

Last week I wrote about studies from the Barna Group which showed our grandchildren (Gen Z) are turning away from their faith at double the rate of any previous generation. This absolutely must get our attention.

Remember & Share

One of the wonderful things about grandchildren is they tend to remind us of the things which are extremely important; things we need to remember and hold on to as grandmas (grandpas and parents, too). They also remind us of the things we need to be focused upon helping our grandchildren remember and hold on to as they grow up. One of these extremely important, "somethings" is the truth we each are loved and have value just the way we are.

"Think and Wonder, Wonder and Think"

Today I'm happy to share with you one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes along with an idea to use it to hand down confident faith.

"Think and wonder, wonder and think!"
There are so many things in life about which we, and the children we love may wonder and think. My grandsons wonder and think about science, creation, all things tech and how to come up with the funniest joke ever!

Stand up for Science and the Truth

As I wrote about last week, many of the children, teens, and young adults we love are leaving their faith. Far, far too many of them as even one is too many. We must be grandmas (grandpas and parents, too) who are committed to telling the children we love the truth. We must be people who live the truth - in every area of our lives, because when we compromise on even one area, we may find we end up paying a very high price as the ones we love see and hear what we do and say and turn away from their faith. We must be people who are committed to the truth and who are not afraid of the truth because when we are afraid and do not tell the truth, we leave an opening for the ones we love to doubt us and what we say.

Step Softly . . .

We grandmas (grandpas and parents, too) love the children who have been gifted to us from God. We love them with all of our heart and we are not shy about showing this love to them.

Invest Your Time Where It Matters the Most

I find this quote by Frederick Douglass to be challenging; it reminds me of another old quote . . . "An ounce of prevention is worth a  pound of cure." When I think of these quotes and my grandchildren I am challenged to keep in the forefront of my mind how important it is for me to choose my words with care and to be certain my actions back those words.

Live Life On Purpose

How do you want to be known . . . and remembered? I want my grandsons to remember I always greeted them with a smile, hug and, "I love you!" I want them to remember their grandma was someone who had real joy.

Focus Upon What Truly Matters Forever

I absolutely love this quote from Gary Chapman; "What you do with your children (and grandchildren) will matter forever." As you look at the hours before you today and in the days to come, keep your focus upon what really matters - both now and forever. Hold tightly to the truth - what you say and do with your grandchildren matters; now and long after you are gone, the memories of you, your love for them and how you were faithful to hand down confident faith are things God will use to encourage your grandchildren throughout their lives and draw them closer to Him.

Trust God with What We Can't Control

We like to think there are things we are able to control in our lives if we just work hard enough, focus enough, pray enough, do enough, but the truth is there are many things we are not able to control - especially when it comes to handing down confident faith. Yes, we are able to plan specific times to have conversations and do activities with our grandchildren/children, but just because we planned and prepared, it does not mean everything will go as we planned. It does not mean our grandchildren will cooperate. It does not mean we will be able to communicate what we wanted to communicate. We are not able to control everything.
